159 Friday, March 6, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. G. Page Five Ab Smii in TIm Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events Carolina fans here in New Bern have taken a terrific ribbing as a result of recent defeats suffered by the Tar Heels. Until Maryland and Virginia put the skids under Frank McGuire’s quint, it was gen erally conceded locally that they were in a class by themselves. There is little reason to regard the team lightly, despite these set backs, but other ball clubs in the Atlantic Coast Conference are no longer plagued by a defeatist atti tude. A reader of The Mirror wants to Today and Every Day A. D. Laughinghouse I* Ready to Give You Courtedbi and Complete Texaco Servico CCC SERVICE STATION Across from Courthouso ME 7-6827 know if any Coastal Plainer was named on the all-time American Legion Junior team picked by Um pire Ernie Quigley of the National League and Umpire Dan Barry of the American League, back in 1941. As a matter of fact, three Coast al Plainers were so honored—^New Bern’s Kirby Higbe, Kinston’s Joe Schultz, and Greenville’s Chubby Dean. Other former Legion stars selected included Ted Williams, Bobby Feller, Joe Gordon, Hal Newhouser, Bobby Doerr, George Case and Buddy Lewis. Also in our mail box is a request for an opinion on just who, as far back as we can recall, was New Bern’s most colorful baseball fan. You could get in a real argument over that one, but our vote would probably go to Dave Brinson. Dave, in the days of the old East Carolina League, toted a mega phone to every gaihe, and when he bellowed the sand dunes tremble'd as far away as Manteo. Listening to hl's caustic comments, and his rea dy supply of wit, was more fun than looking at the duels on the I diamond. * 'V- Odorless Dry Cleaning and Snow White Laundry - ONE-DAY SERVICE - DELIVERY OR CASH & CARRY BRADDY'S 323 8. Our guess is he’ll make further football history there while latching on to a good education. It’s a break too for New Bern fans, who are certain to journey Greenville way to see him perform next season. He toned down slightly in later life, but still whooped it up when his son, Edward, was battering his way to glory at New Bern High/ school as a sensational All-North eastern fullback.
