Page Five CT\0^^ of Athletes and Events Never, as far back as we can re call, have fans given real support to the New Bern High school base ball team. The same disheartening situation applies to other towns, too, and college teams are like wise confronted with empty stands when they take to the diamond. Even in the days when New Bern had an entry in the old East Carolina League, and later in the Coastal Plain League, high school baseball was all but ignored here. This despite the fact that our city was recognized far and wide as a red-hot baseball town. It would seem logical that the na tional pastime on any level would lure customers through the turn stiles, but it didn’t work that way then and there is slim chance for any material change in the future. As much to blame as anyone else are members of the student body and parents of players. If students won’t support their own team, and mothers and fathers fail to put in an appearance at the ball park, it goes without saying that other fans can’t be criticized for their lack of loyalty. The Bruins have won 20 while losing 8 over a two-season span, so the poor attendance can’t be attri buted to an inferior bill of fare. A record as good as the one com piled in 1957 and 1958 has won many a championship, even if it didn’t apply in this instance. Town 'N Country Service Center The locals open their 1959 cam- pagin at home against Morehead City on March 24, and the lads from Down East will be hard to subdue. Morehead has a habit of coming up with a scrappy team, and needs no pep talk to get it in the right frame of mind for a battle with the Bears. Eight games in all will be played here, and there’ll be a like number of contests on enemy ground. The aforementioned Morehead City game, and a square-off at Vance- boro on Mareh 26, is all the action on tap before Roanoke Rapids comes here for the first Northeast ern conference affair on April 3.
