“And he cast down the pieces of
silver in the temple, and departed,
and hanged himself.” — Matthew
127:5.
The Bible does not say which
tree Judas hanged himself from,
1 but it is according to well-establish-
led legends a tree of a particular
[species. This tree grows in Pale-
jstine and all over Southern Europe
[and Western Asia.

It is supposedly the tree because
of the heart-shaped leaves, and the
blood drops ip shape of flowers
growing on the trunks and limbs.
It is said that it turned red in
shame.
The leaves are used for season
ing and food, as well as the blos
soms. Many of the trees grow wild
in Virginia and North Carolina.
Judas is also connected with our
common ordinary May-pop or pas
sion flower. This is only legend
ary. The^re are 300 or more species
of passion flowers, but they are not
referred to in the Bible.
In 1610, history records, Chris
tian symbolism began with the pas-
Sion flowers. Augustinian friar
Emanuel de Villegas (a Mexican)
carried a drawing to James Bosio,
who was doing work on the Cross
of Calvary.
They studied the plant. The half-
opened flower represented the star
that guided the Wise Men to the
Christ Child. The 10 sepals and
petals represented the 10 Apostles
present at the Crucifixion. Peter
and Judas were absent.
The corona represents the crown
of thorns, and five Stamens repre
sent the wounds on the body of
Christ. The three central styles,
with their capitate stigmas, repre
sent the three nails used to fasten
Him to the cro^. The long auxili
ary coilmg Mndrils are symbolic
ofUj««**strands of the scourges
fCisea,to beat Him.
The shapes of the leaves repre
sent thd hands of the persecutors.
In some species the leaves are
marked witl^ round spots to sug-.

In Los Angeles, a group of
neighbors have banded together
to battle careless motorists on
their street. Known as the “Min
ute Women of Roscomare Road,’*
they record the license numbers
of automobiles driven in a hap-
hazardous maimer.
If repeated offenses are re
corded for the same car, the
women send the owner a letter
urging him to drive more care
fully.
Heavy traffic on a school route
in Hollywood, Fla., alarmed
members of the Pilot Club there.
Their commimity-wide campaign
for a new road resulted in traf
fic officials creating a safe route
for school children.
The Hammonds Ind-, Junior
Women’s Club recently com
pleted a study of the, relation
ship between vision deficiencies
and automobile accidents. Work
ing only at night, they analyzed
the accident histories of 2,500
Hammond drivers. Data devel
oped has been turned over to
Purdue University for further
research.
And, in Colorado, members of
the General Federation of
Women’s Clubs made 40,000 tel
ephone calls prior to a holiday
weekend urging motorists to
drive carefully. •

We like the Easter season, the
beauty of Nature and the. awaken
ing of the spiritual impulses as
we dwell on thoughts of the Resur
rection. We welcome the thoughts
of life after a dead winter, and
we can compare the life of Judas
as he hanged himself on the beau
tiful Judas or Red Bud tree to the
poem by Simon Wastel entitled
Man’s Mortality.

Or like the sun, or like the shade,
Or like the gourd which Jonas
had.
E’en such is man, Whose thread is
spun.
Drawn out and cut, and so is
done.
The rose withers, the blossom
- blasteth;
The flower fades; the morning
bastieth;
The sun sets; the shadow flies;
The gourd consumes; and Man
dies.
Like as the grass that’s newly
sprung.
Or like a tale that’s new begun,
Or like the bird that’s here today,
Or like the pearled dew of May,
Or like an hour, or like a span.
Or like the singing of the swan,
E’en such is man, who lives by
breath,
Is here, now there, in life in
■ death.
The grass withers; the tale is
ended;
The bird is flown; the dew’s
ascended;
The hour is short, the span is long.
The Man’s near death; Man’s life
is done!”
