IN NEW BERN TODAY
Students at New Bern High got
their report cards yesterday, with
the usual reaction. Some of us far
ed better than we expected, and
some of us worse. A lot of us will
need the weekend, or longer, to re
cover from the shock.
This was a big week for melody.
Tuesday the New Bern High school
choir and band, along with the
Junior band, competed in the Dis
trict Music contest at Greenville.
As always, our ipusicians perform
ed creditably.
Then Wednesday, at assembly,
the high school dance band gave a
splendid program. So you see,
there was plenty of harmony to
prepare us for any discordant notes
that those report cards injected in
to our minds and hearts on Thurs

day.
We were distressed to learn that
one of the eight marines who lost
their lives in the crash of a flying
boxcar neat Cherry Point was the
father of Wynema Archambault,
the Indian girl who did such beau
tiful and colorful tribal dances
while attending New Bern High
school several years ago.
Wynema was popular with ev
eryone when she was at New Bern
High. She was shy and didn’t talk
much, but her exceptional talent
brought appearances of stage and
before the television camera. She
was written up in the newspapers,
too.
New Bern’s public library has
some brand new volumes for teen
agers on its shelves. Included in
the fiction field are “Heartbreak
Hot Rod”, “The Great Garcias,”
“Heartbreak Street”, “Junior Mi-
ler”, “Across The Tracks”, “Putt-
Putt Skipper”, and “The Black
Fawn.” An excellent new book in
the non-fiction field is “Magic and
Magicians.”
A lot of the college crowd were
home last weekend. They’re still
complaining about the hard work,
but -seem to be weathering the
storm.

A Weekend Prayer
Blessed Lord Jesus, we invite
Your presence in our midst that
we might know You as our person
al Saviour.
Help us tfl realise our need for
real dedication, and iour need Of
Your Spirit in our lives.
We ask You to forgive us for
our prayerlessness, and for our
failure to witness for You when
we see need all around us.
Open our mouths that we might
speak when We would be silent.
Help Us to witness not only with
our lives but with our mouthy, that
through Your word others might
believe. Give us. Lord, a witness.
Amen.

Jive was just three weeks old
when the great New Bern fire de
stroyed his home. He sustained a
burn on his arm, and shortly after
he was stricken with polio that
left him with a leg handicap for
life.
It hasn’t slowed him In the pur
suit of happiness. He and his wife
of 11 years duration have nevef
spoken the first cross word to each
other, and Jive says she is the
“greatest.” His heart js filled with
gratitude too for his children.
The family worships at St. Jo
seph’s Catholic church, and religiofi
is never secondary in the Fisher
home. In considerable measure, we
are inclined to believe. Jive haa
found at least a part of Heaven
right here on earth .
Such is the story of Melvin (Jive)
Fisher, who loves his fellow man.
and lets his light so shine for the
glory of God that shining shoes
just comes naturally.
In an era of racial bitterness, it’s
a story worth the telling — no
matter which side you happen tg
be on.
HARD TO BELIEVE
They may be blessings in dis
guise, but sometimes they have e
hard time proving their identity.
