Agricul tural Extension Service has some new fertilizer recommendations for sweet potato growers. The new recommendations call for higher analysis fertilizer ap plied in split applications. C. Agricultural Extension Serv ice, “is a soil test.” “Without a soil test,” he added, “a general fertilizer guide would be to apply a total of 50* to 60 pounds of nitrogen, 40 to 50 pounds of phosphorus, and 120 pounds of potash per acre.” These recommendations are bas ed on the assumption that the soil DIXON BROS. The recommended fertilizer ca* be applied by placing 350 pounds of 6-12-6 or 400 pounds of 4-12-12 in the row. This can be followed by a sidedressing of either 400 pounds of 8-0-24, or 30 to 40 pounds of actual nitrogen mixed with 200 pounds of sulfate of potash. The nitrogen-potash sidedressing should be applied four to six inches from the plant at the last cultiva tion. The extension service has also changed its recommendations con cerning boron.'* “Boron may be deficient on some soils,” Covington said, “but it is no longer recommended that borax be included in all sweet potato fertilizer. Much of the cracking pre. viously attributed to boron dehci- ency has now been found to be as sociated with nematode injury.” Covington also cautioned farmers against applying stable manure the year sweet potatoes are to be set in a field. The manure may increase scurf. Cotton, corn and milo are prob ably the best crops to precede sweet potatoes, Covington conclud ed.
