I Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY School turned out at noon yester day for the Easter holidays, and we won’t have to go back until Thursday. Having a reprieve from studies is always welcome, and more so at this time of year. Our friends are home from college this week end too, and we are expecting a happy get-together. Although we enjoy the part of Easter’s celebration that isn’t sac red. all of us are certainly aware of the true meaning of this relig ious anniversary. Many of our students at New Bern High school sing in a church ch(ur. Those who don’t will be at- FOR GOOD FOOD & REFRESHMENT, ■ It'S The Wiggly Pig VITA-VAR PAINTS at MITCHELL'S HARDWARE 315 S. Front ME 7-3100 tending services Sunday morning at the choice of their choice. In fact, since so much is said in criticism of teen-agers from time to time, it seems only fair to say that on every Sunday morning— not just Easter—the percentage of teen-agers attending church com pares favorably with the number of grown-ups included among the worshippers. Everybody is excited about the ■junior-senior banquet and prom, even if May 1 is more than month off. Everything is hush-hush and we can’t remotely imagine what the theme is going to be. As usual, Mr. Jimmie Smith is helping the junior class with its plans, and they’re bound to come up with something very clever. They’ll have to go some, however, to beat some of the past themes. Like everybody else in New Bern—or most everybody—we’re looking forward to the official op ening of Tryon Palace. It is a very high honor indeed to have the State Legislature meet here on April 8. While they’re here, we hope they’ll have time to visit the old est school building in North Caro lina, on the Academy green, anck other points of interest in our city. Friday, March 27, 1959 Firelanes Aid in Tree Conservation ( Nearly 100 million tree seedlings have been set in North Carolina this winter. Many of them were set in dry weeds and grass, which makes them very susceptible to fire; especially during the windy month of March. A few firelanes built now by a farm tractor can save a lot of val uable trees later, says 'R. S. Doug lass, forestry specialist for the! State extension service. Any area of young trees should have a disced strip around it, Douglass said. If the area is large, cross strips are recommended. “These disced strips ma^ not stop a fire,’’ Douglass said, “but they will provide a good place from which to backfire and fight the oncoming blaze.’’ point of view. Like we said at the outset. Miss Fannie Trenwith is younger than Springtime, and in her poet’s heart she will always be that way. Never, - as long as there are flowers and; children and memories, could life be dull and unexciting. Miss Fannie celebated her birth day Thursday, and we share with her friends a hope for many hap-, py returns of the day. Gleanings NOW you con fcuy a fOLl SIZE It’s a e/f!aXtmcd*!
