Page Three Buds AND Blossoms MAMIE MILLER “Great is our Lord, and of great power; Who covereth the heaven with clouds, Who prepareth ‘ rain fOT the earth. Who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.”—Psalm 147. Lawns are essential for pretty gardens. Good soil is necessary to grow good grass, unless you spend a lot of money to build your soil up. Apply plenty of humus and veg etation that is well aged, as well as good topsoil to your garden. Bake the surface well with garden rakes. Scatter two pounds of ferti lizer to 100 square feet of soil. Plant good seed from your seed store and nurseryman. They will give you suggestions as to what kind to plant. Remove all rocks from soil, as they can be hit by a lawn mower and cause plenty of You'll Find a Variety of Tropical Fish at Pittman's Aquarium 137 Middle Street WATER HEATER SPECIALISTS We Can Increase the Efficiency of Your Heater at Very Small Cost Honi(| E^ftric Co. dial JME 7^2242 trouble. Keep the soil damp but not wet, until it is well seeded. Do not fertilize grass until it is 60 days old at least. Apply fertilizer when the grass is dry. . Do not abuse or tramp on grass unnecessarily. A good lawn can be come a permanent one. In one of our forestry manuals we find how important and beautiful grass may be. Tribute to Grass Lying in the sunshine among the buttercups and dandelion of May, our earliest recollections are of grass; and when the fitful fear is enc|ed, and the foolish wrangle of the market and forum is closed gress heals over the scar where our descent into the bosom of the earth has made, and the carpet of infant becomes the blanket of the dead. Grass is the forgiveness of Na ture—her constant benediction. Fields trampled with battle, satu rated with blood, torn with the rut of cannon, grow green again with grass, and carnage is forgotten. Streets abandoned by traffic be come grass-grown like rural lanes, and are obliterated. Forests decay harvests perish, flowers vanish, but grass is immortal. Beleaguered by the sullen hosts of winter, it withdraws into the impregnable fortress of its subter ranean vitality, and emerges upon the first solicitation of spring. Sown by the winds, by wander ing birds, propagated by the subtle agriculture of the elements which are its minister and' servants, it softens the outline of the world. It bears no blazonry of bloom to charm the senses with fragrance J. W. SMITH AGENCY, MNC. GENERAL INSURANCE HOTEL GOVERNOR TRYON. HINTS TO HOMEMAKERS During this cold-catching sea son, plan to include winter greens in your meals. These are good sources of vita min A and C, both of which are needed to help resist and fight in fections ip the body, says Miss S. Virginia Wilson, nutrition special ist for the N. C. Agricultural Ex- tention Service;_. If greens are not popular at your house. Miss Wilson points out there is .a possibility you are not cooking them properly. For tender greens that have a thin leaf, a little water needs to be added other than the amount that sticks to the leaves as they are washed. Then cook them quickly. Cover pan to speed cooking and cook vegetables only until tender. The general rule for cooking greens and all vegetables is to cook them in the smallest possible amount of water in a short cook ing period. Overcooking changes color, food value and makes them harder to di gest. or splendor, but its homely hue is more enchanting than the lily or the rose. It yields no fruit in earth or air, and yet, should its harvest fail for a single year, famine^would depopulate the world. —John J. Ingalls. There are many writers who have written on the subject of grass. One poem we remember is by Em ily Dickinson: THE GRASS The grass so little has to do— A sphere of simple green. With only butterflies to brood, ■ And bees to entertain. And stir all day to pretty tunes; The breezes fetch along, And hold the sunshine in its lap And bow to everything. And thread the dews all night, like pearls, A dutchpss were too common In such a noticing And even when it dies, to pass In odours so divine. As' lowly spices gone to sleep, Or amulets of pine. . And then to dwell in soverign . barns. And dream the day away— The grass so little has to do, I wish I were the hay! Spare the rod and spoil the child is a saying that smacks strongly of truth. Even so, the average New Bern father would rather be thrashed a dozen times than ad minister corporal punishment to his own son. To begin with. Dad usually shows up several hours after the brat has misbehaved. By that time junior is actirig like a little angel or hid ing in the corner like a terrified mouse. Mom saw him in a different light, and naturally it put her into a tizzy when he threw a tantrum, chunked "a rock through a window or pulled up the neighbor’s flow ers. She should have worn the seat of his pants out, then and there, and maybe she did. But whether she did or she didn’t. Dad is sup posed to give the young offender a good going over when he arrives home -from work, all fagged out. No father wants to be pictured as a sort of goblin, who pounces on bad little hoys,, but that’s the role Williams' 66 Ser. Here he comes in from the office or the store, where everything went wrong most of the day. What does he find in Home Sweet Home—that veritable haven of rest? Mom is scowling, if not downright enraged, and right away Dad is supposed to reach the boil ing point, too. It’s hard to blow your stack, when you’re not steamed up, so one of two things happens. Junior es capes the licking he deserves, or his old man does the job half heartedly and then worries himself sick long after the tot has sobbed himself to sleep. That’s the worst part of all for a parent, looking down at a sleep ing child that you had to punish. No matter how badly a kid misbe haves, when he finds solace in slumberland he looks like a little angel. No wonder New Bern fathers turn chicken over doing their duty.
