New Bern fans are happy to
have Fred Shipp back in town, aft
er recent surgery. There’s no doubt
about it, pound for pound he was
the greatest gridiron star we ever
turned out here.
His football feats at New Bern
High school need no detailing at
this late date, and his spectacular
ball carrying for Trinity (now Duke
University) is equally familiar to
oldsters.
As a professional, performing
for the Ironton Tankers, he had the
distinction of playing with Amer
ica’s greatest athlete of the cen
tury, the one and only Jim Thorpe.
It’s hard to visualize a back
weighing just 140 pounds, excelling
in pro ball against adversaries in
the 200-pound class. However, Fred
did stand out as a David among the
Goliaths, and even in the twilight
of his career was able to lead the

attack for a New Bern pro outfit
that met the Charlotte Bantams at
Kafer Park.
With all due respects to Charlie
Justice and others, Fred was the
best broken field runner we ever
had the privilege to see. He was
brilliant in his own era, and in
modern football he would have
been just as brilliant.
It’s still too early to draw defi
nite conclusions, but as of now the
Northeastern Conference baseball
campaign looks like a wide open
race. With good pitching, and they
may get it, the New Bern Bears can
be a factor in the final outcome.
And now, a question from our
mailbox. Who was the first New
Bern player to make an All-Coastal
Plain League team? The answer is
Uriah “Swamp” Norwood, who got
the centerfield berth in 1934. He
repeated in 1935, and that year
Lefty Kennel joined him in the se
lect group.
MATTER OF PRIDE
After all it takes a lot of courage
to/admire the man who made a

Wajt Disney Makes
New Kind of Movie:
A Real 'Howler'
A new kind of Walt Disney fan
tasy, this one tailored for hilarity,
is ‘The Shaggy Dog,” at the Kehoe
Theater.
The story of a modern teen-age
boy, turfied by old-fashioned magic
into a part-time Bratislavian sheep
dog, is Walt’s first live-action pic
ture set in the present day.
“The Shaggy Dog” brings Fred
MacMurray back to comedy after
an absence of five years. It also in
troduces a new screen personality
for whom Hollywood is predicting
overnight stardom—Shaggy, the
mop-pawed, hairy-eyed English
sheep dog playing the title role
of the teen-ager in canine form.
In the picture he drives a hot
rod, talks over the telephone,
rounds up a gang of spies, and res
cues a girl from drowning, among
other things that you would natur
ally expect of a dog that a teen-age
boy had been turned into.
Tommy Kirk, who had the key
role in Disney’s “Old Yeller,”
plays the hapless lad whose mis
adventures confuse a whole town.
And Kevin Corcoran, teamed with
him in “Old Yeller,” again plays
his little brother, a boy who is
delighted to have a dog in the fami
ly-
Fred MacMurray plays the boys’
bewildered father, a retired mail
man who hates dogs, and Jean Ha-
gene, for three years the wife of
Danny Thomas on television, comes
out of a brief retirement to play
their rattle-brained mother.
“The Shaggy Dog” marks the
motion picture debut of Annette
Funicello, the shapely, black-eyed
16-year-old who for three years ap
peared as the darling of Disney’s
Mickey Mouse club on TV. Annette-
plays Tommy’s home-town girl
friend, with Tim Considine, anoth
er graduate of the Mickey Mouse
club, cast as his rival.
The story is based on “The
Hound of Florence,” a touching
novel of medieval days by Felix
Salten, who wrote “Bambi” and
“Perri.” But in the hands of writer-
associate producer Bill Walsh and
his script collaborator, Lillie Hay
ward, it has come out a sparkling
up-to-date shaggy dog story retain
ing practically nothing of the origi
nal beyond the shape-fitting of
boy-into-pooch and the magic Bor
gia ring by means of which the
trick is done.
Featured in the cast are Cecil
Kellaway, as a whimsical professor
of medieval history, Alexander
Scourby, Roberta Shore, James
Westerfjeld and Jacques Aubuchon.
The Buena Vista release was direcU
ed by Charles Braton.
