Page Six THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, April 10, 1959 Free Wheeling By BILL CROWELL Dtpt. of Motor Vohiclot. State of North Carolina TEST YOURSELF . . . According to a recent survey, 34 per cent of the drivers interviewed thought themselves “better than average” drivers. But to be a good driver means you must know more than how to steer and stop. You must also have a thorough knowledge of state traf fic laws. I’m willing to bet that not many Tar Heel drivers, even those on the road every day, can score 100 per cent on a test of their traffic law knowledge. Read these questions carefully, check your answers, then consult the end of the column for the correct ones: 6 Rooms, 3 Bed Rooms, Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen and Garage. Large Lot. He is concerned about it too, but in his heart he feels that there’s good in all of us, and enough bad to keep us out of the scorner’s seat. He loves his fellow man more than he loves coffee, and consider ing how much of the stuff he drinks a day that’s more than enough to go around. One of his fellow imbibers. County Auditor Ben Jones, can vouch for that. So tolerant is Bob that he mar ried a Grant, even though his Con federate father named him for Rob ert E. Lee. In this instance, toler ance paid off with extra dividends, since Lottie is just as nice as he is, if less conspicious. Like we said, Bob is rare enough to put in a glass case or a cage. Getting him still long enough to effect his capture is the big prob lem, and nobody is smart enough to solve it. Some Folks in Area Lagging In SS Report By CLAY STONE, Field Representative, Social Security Administration From a survey that we recently made we have found that there are some people in the area who are not reporting their household workers for social security pur poses. Under the social security system, taxes are Imposed by the Federal Insurance Contributions' Act on both employers and employees These taxes are sometimes known as "social security taxes.” The em ployer’s tax and the employee’s tax are each 2% per cent of taxa ble wages paid, making a total of 3 per cent. In general, services of a house hould nature in and about a private home include services performed by cooks, waiters, butlers, house keepers, governesses, maids, valets, baby sitters, janitors, laundresses, furnacemen, caretakers, handymen, gardeners and chauffeurs. When a household employee Is hired, a written record of the em ployee’s name and social security account number should be made On each payday the employer should deduct Vk per cent of the cash wages paid the employee if the employee meets the $50 a quar ter test. Then on or before each April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31, send or take a tax re turn to the District Director of In ternal Revenue, together with pay ment of the full amount of taxes due for the previous calendar quar ter. The “$50 a quarter test” simply rneans that if an employer pays a household employee $50 or more cash wages in a calendar quarter the wages must be reported. If anyone wishes any additional information about reporting house hold employees just drop a card to your local social security office and ask for Folder OASI-21. This fold er also contains a postcard that may be used to secure an employer’s identification number. state traffic laws excellent; 7-10, very good; 5-0, good; below five, fair. where passing might be unsafe. 4. 50 feet. 5. 55 mph. 6.
