1959 re Friday, April 17, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Five At Se«n in Tfm Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events New Bern fishermen, like an glers elsewhere, have their own no tions about what bait or lure to use in this or that situation. Forever experimenting, they are most coop erative in keeping manufacturers of fishing tackle in business. Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox is no exception, despite the fact that he not only has every conceivable bait in his personal col. lection but is in the. tackle manu facturing business himself. Repeatedly, white he was down this way on his second hitch in the Marine Corps, we went with him to local sporting goods coun ters. Never did he walk away from the counter without buying a lure or two. It’s just one of the quirks of fishing that a fellow never has enough gear to satisfy him. s|!. sH ♦ *i* Members and guests of the Crav en Wildlife club will get a full load of entertainment and enlighten ment from both barrels tonight. Meeting at 7:30 in the Maola Opera House, they’ll hear C. V. (Buck) Rogers talk on his favorite subject —guns. He’ll have his collection of prized weapons on hand, too. Sjt JlS !|« A reader wants to know who pitched the first no-hit, no-run game in the Coastal Plain after the loop entered organized baseball. Tarboro’s Danny York achieved that distinction on May 16, 1937, with a 1-0 decisio.n over Snow Hill. His mound opponent, Joe Motsing- er, allowed just three hits, but in the fourth inning Earl Carnahan singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error. That turned out to be the ball game. >{» »{C sj{ How would you define the word sport? Among other things, Web ster describes it as a game, outdoor play, and as fun and amusement. MOORE'S BARBECUE Phone ME 7-2276 1216 Broad Street UNFORGETTABLE — New Bern baseball fans will nev er stop talking about the slugging feats of Lester Burge, who graduated from the Bears to the Brooklyn Dodgers. When the locals won the Coastal Plain crown in 1938 he batted .348. Of his 98 hits that drove in 63 runs, 22 were homers, 21 were triples and six triples. In oth er words, half of his hits were for extra bases. GLEANINGS — (Continued from Page 4) in the utmost detestation and ab horrence. The deliberate and pre conceived malice with which it was contrived, and the brutal fury with which it was executed, equally be speak them unawed by the Laws of their Country, insensible to ev ery moral duty and wickedly dis affected to Government itself. The dissolute principles and licentious spirit by which these people are actuated and stand united, render them too formidable for the ordi nary process of Law. Sensible of this. Sir, we owe it to our Sovereign our constituents, and to ourselves to adopt measures at once spirited and decisive. “The Palace erected by this Prov. ince for the residence of your Ex cellency and successors in office, is truly elegant and noble. To your unwearied attention and influence and to the ability and diligence of the Architect, the inhabitants of this country owe what honor and credit it may reflect upon them. “We entirely agree with you. We are convinced that the peace and happiness of Society much de pends on a pious and liberal edu cation of its members. To neglect an object so interesting and im portant, is to withhold from this country a blessing that will neces sarily accrue to it, from a rising and instructed generation. “To continue and provide for the garrison of Fort Johnston at the eve of a war is both prudent and necessary, the safety and security of one of the principal trading ports in this Province depends on it. We shall therefore pay due ah tention to this measure as well as every other your Excellency has been pleased to recommend. "Your approaching departure from your Government is a cir cumstance truly detrimental to the interests of this Province, and is justly to be lamented. It is a mis fortune peculiar to this country, that as soon as its Governor is be come acquainted with its constitu tion and the temper of its inhabi tants, he is by some ill-fated means or other removed from us. Nothing, Sir, on this afflicting occasion, can afford us consolation but a firm reliance that the well-known benevolence of your disposition and friendly concern for the wel fare of mankind will dispose you to use that Influence your merit and station justly entitle you to, in favor of the Constitutional Liber ties of North America in general, and the interest of this Pi’ovince in particular. Some people live two-thirds of their life on the provision made for them by others. We graduate into coopera tors, earn our own living, hold up our own end of the job, produce a little extra for the pensioners that are coming on behind us. A few enter the third stage, where they do something more for the world than the world does for them. They put the world in their debt by making every man’s living better, or his hope larger, or his opportunity wider. Just to hold up one’s end of the load is a great and satisfactory thing; it makes one a man. However, it only squares the account. But to do more for the world than the world does for you— that is success. —Henry Ford. soever you may go you have the united and unfeigned wishes of this people for the peace and hap piness of yourself and family.”— Signed, R.
