Voght to Mildred State Ranks Second for Trees Planted A report recently released by the U. S. Department of Agriculture shows that during the past five years tree plantings in North Caro lina have increased by 570 per cent. This is the highest increase shown by any state in the nation with the exception of West Virgin ia. The average national increase amounted to 220 per cent. The report shows that in 1953 North Carolina landowners planted 13,124 acres in forest tree seed lings. In 1958 they planted 75,716 acres. Figures on the number of acres planted this past winter are not available. John Gray, in charge of forestry extension for the N. C. Agricultural Extension Service, es timates, however, that well over 100,000 acres have been planted in the 1959 season. = A Annn oiAre eat 5 = A GOOD PLACE TO EAT - 5immminmmnimnnnnmiiiinmmnnnmnnn7 R. I believe that spring has turned the corner now and that we can ex pect a little better treatment weath er-wise. Hope so anyway. I dislike bringing up the subject of disease and insect pests, while we are enjoying the flowering trees and shrubs which are now in all of their seasonal beauty. Re member that they have a way of sneaking up on us and causing real trouble before we realize what is happening. Here are some of the worst of fenders: the Lace Bug, especially bad on pyracantha, azalea and Washington Hawthorn; White Fly and Cottony Cushion ^ale on pit- tosporum and gardenia. All of these may be controlled by sraying thor oughly with Malathion (25 per cent wettable powder) at the rate of two tablespoons in one gallon of water. If the 50 per cent emulsifiable con centrate is used, add two teaspoons of Malathion for each gallon of wa ter. Be sure to cover the under sides of the leaves. Red Spider mites on azalea can also be con trolled with either of these mix tures. Be careful when using spiay ma terials of any kind. Keep labeled and stored in a safe place. Avoid breathing either dust, or spray drift. Carefully follow manufactur er’s instructions printed on the con tainer.
