KENNEL KAPERS
IN
KANGAROO LAND
Hello again,
By our humble calculations this
article should reach you in May.
If not the Mirror must be pulling
a fast one—he (J. Rascal McDaniel)
might he holding some articles out
as unprintable.
We thought maybe we ought to
tell you a little about Melbourne,
Australia, since it is and will be the
name you’re reading in these writ
ings. Melbourne is the capital of
Victoria, one of Australia’s states,
and has a population of over one
and a half million people. The city
pays proud tribute to the forefa
thers who not too long ago founded
the city along modern lines.
'riie Melbourne business district
comprises an area one mile square
in the center of the city. Radiating
out from this business metropoiis
are residentiai suburbs feeding
their inhabitants into the city on
quick, efficient railways.
One of the few bad features of
Melbourne’s traffic is the infernal
trains or street cars that still shut
tle along clogging up the main
streets under outdated power lines.
The trams are on the way out

but most Melbournians ruefully cal
culate that it will be another ten
years or so. The business district,
aside from the trams, is quite pleas
ant.
Collins street, one of the famous
business streets of the world (cor
responding to our Wall street in
New York), has the Paris look with
sidewalk cafes under shade trees
along both sides of the street.
There are no skyscrapers here,
the tallest buildings usually on the
order of five or six stories, and
the streets don’t have that walied-in
feeling of many of our larger ci
ties.
There is a very keen rivalry be
tween Melbourne and Sidney, the
other large city in Austrilia. Mel
bournians says that Sydney is too
“Americanized” and Sydneyites
say that Melbourne is too cold and
staid. We can’t speak on Sydney
because we haven’t been there yet,
but definitely we don’t think Mel
bourne is cold and lifeless. We’ll
be giving reasons presently.
The calm and beautiful little
Yarra river runs through the city
giving Melbourne the perfect back
drop for beautiful parks and gar
dens.
On of the city’s finest features
is that over one-fourth of the area
within the city is either park or
sport space. Just a couple of min
utes walk from the business dis
trict will take you into beautiful
park areas.
As many of you may know, the
1956 Olympic (lames were held in
Melbourne, and the city provided
splendid facilities for the sporting
events. One of the most beautiful
parks in Melbourne is Olympic
Park, just one minute by train

from the downtown district.
Here they have the Moltiourne
Cricket Grounds, a beautiful oval
used tor track, cricket and football,
seating 120,000 people. Olympic
Park has a new and ultramodern
swimming pool in which Austra
lians have recently broken many
world swimming records.
Besides these there are three oth
er grounds adjacent used for vari
ous events which seat about 20,000
each. I have been fortunate to see
many sports layouts in my life, but
this is by far the best I have ever
seen. You can imagine that Mel
bournians are very proud of it, too.
Just this year work was com
pleted on the ultramodern Sydney
Meyer Music Bowl. This is built on
a hillside about a half mile from
the city much on the order of the
famous Hollywood Music Bowl.
The huge shell covering the
stage is all aluminum and resem
bles a huge bat wing. Some people
think it’s too modern—I’ll compro
mise and say that it’s certainly dif
ferent.
On a hill overlooking Melbourne
is a huge temple erected to com
memorate the dead of both World
Wars. It resembles greatly one of
the old Aztec Indian temples of
Mexico.
In it is buried an unknown
soldier, and there is a story to his
tomb. Bored through solid rock al
most 100 feet thick above the tomb
is a slender tube.
After great calculations and pre
cision measurements the hole was
bored so that if the sun is shining
of the eleventh hour of the elev
enth day of the eleventh month of
each year, the sun will be in such a
position as to shine directly
through the long tube and show
sunlight in the shape of a cross on
the tomb.
To Australians this is more than
curosity, it is sacred, and on Anzac
Day (their Armistice Day) every
thing closes down to commemorate
two costly wars.
Next week we’ll continue this
same discussion with some inci
dents from the Billy Graham Cru
sade, the filming of the big movie
“On The Beach”, and Herb Elliott,
the great runnel’, breaking another
world’s record (and I saw him do
it).
Until then.
Cheerio!!
