No major league player in base
ball’s long history has better dem
onstrated the importance of stay
ing in shape than Boston’s incom
parable Ted Williams.
When he came down this way
for his second hitch in the Marine
Corps, he continued to watch his
weight. On the occasions we had to
eat with him, here in New Bern,
he was determined to follow his
self-imposed diet. This despite the
fact that he had no assurance he
would ever play baseball again.

It was going to be quite a spell
before he could return to the dia
mond, if he returned from Korea
at all. And, if he did get back, Ted
would be at an age when the aver
age big leaguer is only a has been.
Even so, he had no intentions of
straying from bis habit of superb
physical fitness.
That physical fitness, coupled
with his marvelous reflexes, prob
ably saved his life a few months
later, when his jet crashed and
burned in the Korean conflict. Ted
kept his head, and escaped a flam
ing death.
As everyone knows, he returned
in due time to the Red Sox, and
continued his great performance
for that ball club. Subsequent in
juries, including his most recent
one, would have finished a lesser

It is our considered opinion that
no other baseball great—past or
present—could have duplicated his
amazing record under the same ad
verse circumstances. His ability to
come back repeatedly, and take up
where he left off, is the most im
pressive aspect of his extended
sports career.
The records books are filled with
his feats. Yet, even his severest
critics must admit that he would
have broken still more records, but
for the fact that he spent five
years of his prime in military uni
form.
Take five years away from the
record of any other baseball great,
and you’ll make a shambles of the
diamond deeds that placed him
among the immortals. This would
apply to all of them—^Babe Ruth,
Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Tris Speak
er, Hans Wagner—and in our pres
ent day, the Stan Musial who Wil
liams accords such high admira
tion.
