Buds
AND
Blossoms
By
MAMIE MILLER
In The Beginning—Ged
“In the beginning God created
the heaven and earth. And the
earth was without form, and void
and darkness was upon the face of
the deep. And the Spirit of God
moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light:
and there was light. And God saw
the light, that it was good; and
God divided the light from the
darkness.” — Genesis 1:1-4.

"The Earth It the Lord's"
Thanks to our Governor, Luther
H. Hodges, who declared May 3-10
to be Soil Stewardship week in
North Carolina. We fall in line with
the Soil Conservation Districts of
America in observing this Soil
Stewardship week, even with our
churches. Thomas Jefferson said,
“While the farmer holds title to the
land, actually it belongs to all the
people because civilization itself
rests upon the soil. Those who la
bor in the earth are the chosen
people of God. Whose breast He
has made His peculiar deposit for
substantial and genuine virture.”
Insist upon your church observing
this important week.
There are many ways we may
keep our earth in keeping with our
pledge.
Save The Soil
Trees, shrubs and grass will save
the soil. Thoughtless people who
manage their farms badly, such
as: careless farming, over-grazing
of range and pasture, is a loss to
soil. Improper logging, forest fires

Forests should be kept produc
tive. Always leave enough trees
to replace the ones being harvest
ed. It means money to keep the
forest growing. '
Protect our drainage basins so
the growth may save the soil.
When campers, ranchers, farmers
and lumbermen use the water basin
they should protect it by saving
the small plants, the flowers and
wildlife. If we protect the water
basins and keep our land clean
and healthy, we can prolong the
use of water for all growing things.
Wildlife, birds, mammals and
fish provide recreation and money
for millions of people. We should
protect wildlife with food and shel
ter and water.
This is ouf Conservation Pledge:
I give my pledge as an American
to save and faithfully to defend
from waste the natural resources
of my country—its soil and miner
als, its forests, waters and Mid
life.
Enjoy the great outdoors of liv
ing color, protect the wild flowers.
Be careful to replace anything you
don’t transplant. Leave some for
others to enjoy. Campers please
don’t abuse growing things. Every
thing is growing here for the peo
ple to see and enjoy the fragrance
of our blooming country side. The
beauty means much to our mass of
tourists who come through this
territory, too.
Protect our birds, keep them

part of God’s plan in making a per

We have a poem from Gordon,
a Folk poem named, “My Little
Birds.” Listen at the sentiment.
My Little Birds
You have your water and your
grain.
You have your fields all full of
grass.
You have horizons far and wide.
Flutter along, my little birds.
Fletter along , . . flutter along.
And sing me a song, my Uttls
birds.
Come fly around me, little birds.
1)0 not fear a hunters gun.
I am a hunter you can see.
Flutter along my little birds.
Flutter along . . . flutter along
And sing me a song, my little
birds.
Your children are inside the nest,
Tucked in between-feathers and
straw..
Your children will sleep undis
turbed by me. '
Flutter along, my little birds, '
And sing me a song, my little
■ birds.
Most people have sense enough to
mind their own business, but very
few are willing to let it go at that.
