Page Five As Seen in TIm Mirror's of Athletes and Events It looks like a fine season is in store for the New Bern Recrea tion Department’s Pony League. Pre-season contests have given the youngsters a taste of what’s com ing, and they’re all set for games arranged for the regular summer schedule. Softball is getting off to a good start too, which isn’t surprising in a town that goes for the sport in a big way. Incidentally, this new generation may not know it, but their own Dads didn’t know what softball was. They played a lot of baseball however, on the nearest vacant lot. * * * « Wallace Wade’s resignation as commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and his announced re tirement from the sports scene, is a matter of keen regret among athletes, officials, coaches and fans. One of the all-time greats in the coaching profession, when he led Alabama and Duke to the grid iron heights, he is first and last a Williams' 66 Ser. Wade, unlike some coaches who curse and browbeat their players, achieved spectacular results by treating them with respect. He did n’t pamper them, but by the same token he wisely took the attitude that a boy with the right qualifica tions to be a successful athlete doesn’t profil] from needless abuse. ♦ * « « Wrestling and track may have been regarded as “minor” sports when they were added -to the ath letic program at New Bern High School, but most of the sports glo ry reaped hereabouts this year came from the noteworthy per formances of these two teams. Which just goes to show how im portant a diversified, well-rounded program can be. If you can’t love your enemies, compromise—forget them. ^ tiANDY MAN — New Bern i liad better ball players than little Howard Hobgood in Coastal Plain days of yore, but no Bruin ever hustled more. He was a great favor ite with the fans, so we fig ured you’d like it if we ran his picture for old time’s , sake.
