Buds
AND
Blossoms
MAMIE MILLER
“The land which you are going
to possess is a land of hills and
valleys, which drinks water by the
rain from heaven, a land which the
Lord your God cares for; for the
eyes of the Lord your God are al
ways upon it, from the beginning
of the year to the end of the year.”
—Deut. 11:11-12.
Cacti will grow better in a loose
porous soil. Do not use nitrogen,
but add lime. Keep the tempera
ture about 50 degrees to make the
cacti do well. Keep night-blooming
cereus in a light place all the
time. When you cut back this plant,
rub the cut with sulphur. Remove
mealy bugs with Ivory soapsuds on
cactus.
Repot Christmas Cactus when
the pot is filled with roots. Buds
fall from these plants because they
are usually given too much water.
Give plants plenty of potash. Use
liquid manure weekly.
A cacti is from the family of
Cactaceae. A succulent is a fleshy
plant that can conserve water in
its tissues. They require about the
same treatment. Succulents like
brick added to soil and lots of
lime. Many succulents make lovely
window boxes. They look like a

sweet alyssum, stock, mignonette,
sweet peas and pinks.
Plant begonias in a well porous
soil that is rich in humus. Fertilize
once a week in growing season and
once each three weeks in winter
months. If begonias drop leaves
and lack blooms, it shows they get
too little light and temperature is
too low.
Enjoy the many little plants that
you may grow on your place. Even
to the little rock garden and the
lily-padded pool is a spot where
God is constantly talking in a
language that everyone under
stands.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox gives us a
glimpse of His world in “Progress.”
Progress
Let there be many windows to your
soul,
That all the glory of the
universe
May beautify it. Not the narrow
pane
Of one poor creed can catch
the radiant rays
That shine from countless sources.
Tear away
The blinds of superstition; let
the light
Pour through fair windows broad
as Truth itself
And high as God. Why should
the spirit peer
Through some priest-curtained
orifice, and grope
Along dim corridors of doubt,
when all
The splendor from unfathomed
seas pf space
Might bathe it with the golden
waves of love?
Sweep up the debris of decaying
faiths;
Sweep down the cobwebs of worn
out beliefs.
And throw your soul wide open
to the light
Of reason and knowledge. Tune
your ear
To all the wordless music of the
stars
And to the voice of Nature, and
your heart
Shall turn to truth as goodness

Make Plans Early
To Handle Weeds
Are your weed control tools and
machines ready to go? Have you
made your final plans on how to
handle weeds on land this summer?
Old standby tools like cultivators
and hoes should be checked now
before you get busy with other
jobs. Now is the time to do this
job just as surely as there is a
right time to cultivate and hoe for
effective weed control and to tCp-
dress for the high yield.
Newer tools like your sprayer for
applying weed chemicals need to
he checked, too. Applying chemical
weed killers at the right time is
even more important than getting
some cultivating done at the right
time. A sprayer which hOs become
fouled with dust and rust won’t be
very serviceable at spraying time.
Take time now to clean it up.
Be sure to replace worn nozzles and
valves, rotted hose, etc.
