Music has been a bright spot at
New Bern High as usual this year
Mr. David Walters’ band concert on
May 7 was a thrilling experience
for all of us. The NBHS band and
the Central Junior High school
band both gave grand perform
ances. We were very proud when
Bill Cox had a chance to display
his ability as a student conductor,
and John Gaskill was a scream as
the paperhanger in “Concert For
a One-Armed Paper Hanger.”

Recently, the New Bern chapter
presented ■& beautiful Confederate
flag to the student of New Bern
High school, and today it’s attrac
tiveness adds much to the high
school auditorium.
Incidentally, the gift was in
memory of Miss Mary Jones, who
served as president of the local
UDC for many years. This gentle,
highly intelligent woman embodied
all the fine qualities that the South
is proud to claim as its own. Giv
ing the flag as a memorial in her
name was a fitting gesture.
Thanks to her, and other like her
living and dead, those who wrote
history in blood for their beloved
Southland in the heartbreak of the
’60’s will never be completely for
gotten. A busy world may not feel
disposed to pause for remembrance
but a grateful few will always be
around to honor the wearers of the
gray. ;
