A common practice of adults, when calling on the telephone, is to bluntly ask, “Who is this?” They don’t intend to be rude, as a rule, but to ask the person at the other end of the line to identify himself without first revealing your own identity is improper to say the least. Jim Constantine was trying to Impress this on his 12 year old daughter, Jane, the other night. Jane’s younger sister, Kathy, was listening, and her mouth popped open in astonishment. “You mean,” Kathy interrupted, “that I’m supposed to say who I am when I call up-” When her father answered in the affirmative, she shook her head in bewilderment. Then she ex ploded, “If I tell them who I am 'for Top Tunes by Your Favorite Recording Stars YOUR TEEN-AGE MUSIC CENTER IS HAWKS Radio & Appliance Co. 327 Middle St. * when I call Martha, they hang up.” The reason for this, it developed, is the fact that Kathy calls her friend Martha umptgen times dur ing a day. And, undoubtedly, .Mar- fJia keeps the wire hot from her end of the line too. All of which can be pretty ex asperating to the grown folks in both houses. If you’ve got tots or teen agers in your home, you’ve had the same problem to cope with. Anyhow, it doesn’t make sfense to Kathy to tell who you are, and get the hang-up treatment. Unless we miss our guess, she’ll keep right on calling, and asking for Martha, without saying “This is Kathy Constantine.” Incidentally, Kathy has a way of (making news. YouTl recall that we’ve written about her before, not only in The Mirror but in State newspaper. Occasionally, she does n’t appreciate the stories, but they are much too cute to keep secret. Besides, she has always forgiven us,- although once it took her several days to cool off. DOm SETTLE FOR LESS THAN THE BEST Robertson^s - Welding Service 1107 N. MOTOR MAIDS Gear Your Speed To Your Brakes By Martha Johnson Dodge Safety Consnlunt Whether you are driving in city traffic, on country roads, or cruising along one of the safest superhighways, be careful to drive at a speed which allows you to control your car com pletely at all times. “Many drivers put far too much reliance on their brakes to keep them out of trouble, no matter how fast they drive,” Colonel Hugh H. Waggoner, su perintendent of the Missouri Highway Patrol told me re cently. “Remember, the faster you drive, the slower you stop. So when you drive at speed—allow yourself plenty of room in which to maneuver and stop,” Wag goner said. Granting an average reaction time on the part of the driver, here is what you must expect-— before you stop: At 30 miles per hour, it’ll take 78 feet to come to a complete stop. At 40 MPH it will take you 125 feet. At 50 MPH it’ll be 188 feet At 60 MPH—272 feet At 70 MPH—381 feet. I know that I’m not the best judge of distances, and.suspect that you may misjudge once in a while too. So, always give yourself more room than you think you need. That extn dis- tance may mean safety.
