Basketball tournaments in June!
This was something I never
thought I’d see; but here it is June
and I’m in Adelaide, South Austra
lia, for the Australian equivalent
of the Dixie Classics.
Every year the universities in
Australia meet in one of the capi
tal cities during school term vaca
tions for their big basketball tourn
ament of the year. Since I am lucky
enough to be playing regularly for
Melbourne University, I am in Ade
laide for a week enjoying a little
recreation with the round ball.
The teams in the tournament
this year are Adelaide University,
Melbourne University, Sydney Uni
versity, University of Western Aus
tralia, University of Queensland,
University of Tasmania and New
England University.
Basketball here is very different
from what we have back home in

many respects. It has taken no lit
tle effort to adjust to some aspects.
(1) Teams (this includes all uni
versity athletic teams) don’t have
paid coaches and often don’t even
have coaches. The teams elect
their own president of the club
who serves as captain and often as
coach if the team can’t find some
one qualified to do the job know
ing he’ll receive no financial retri
bution.
(2) Every team in the tourna
ment plays every other team once.
At the end of the tournament the
team with the best record wins.
Usually any tie is broken by giving
the championship to the team
that has the greatest point percent
age (ratio of points scored to
points scored against).
(3) Facilities in Australia are
generally poor for basketball. They
hare some nice courts but very lim
ited seating capacity all over. Most
courts have spectator room for only
300-400.
(4) -Generally the quality of bas
ketball is much lower than back
home. I’ve only seen one or two
players so far who could make the
starting line-ups on most of our
college teams. There seems to be
more of a lack of know-how'than
ability, and there aren’t many tall
boys who have adapted themselves
to basketball.
(5) When teams make trips, the
individual members have to pay
most of their own way including
travel, food and sleeping accommo
dations. In respect to travel the
railroads do give a big discount to
athletic teams for rail fare, but this
is totally different from athletics
at home where everything is prac
tically spoon-fed to team members.
There are actually many more
minor differences in rule techni
calities but this is enough to show
you that even a common denomina
tor between countries like basket
ball can have differences.
Over here a zone defense is
looked upon as almost sissy basket
ball compared to man-to-man or
pressing defense. Fouls in the back
court don’t get foul shots—just the
ball out of bounds. Technical fouls
are called immediately for the first
action made toward any referee in
mute or vocal protest (ugh!).
Well, I’ll now beg pardon to all
who do not understand the techni
cal basketball terms I’ve used. Our
purpose is not to cut anyone com
pletely out of an article, but maybe
some of the dumb athletes who un
derstand this article may not “dig'
some of the finer arts in the other
articles—ha!
Our team, Melbourne University,
is lucky to be coached by a fellow
who used to play with Wyoming
several years ago when they were
in the Dixie Classic. Elder Gardner
is now here in Australia with the
Mormon Church organization. He,
just as other Mormons, gives sev
eral years of his life in traveling
to inform people on the Mormon
religion.
The Mormons have a group of
about 30 young men stationed in
Melbourne, and they have one of
the most colorful and certainly one
of the best basketball teams in the
area. Their team is known as the
Masonic Sunday
Suspense, coupled with violent
and dramatic action, makes "The
Hangman" one of the most excih
ing and enjoyable films of the
year. Robert Taylor, Tina Louise
and Fess Parker star in the Ma
sonic's feature—starting its four-
day run Sunday.
Mormon “Yankees”; and since all
the fellows are required to be sin
gle, you can imagine that they are
the great favorite with the female
basketball followers.
Basketball is catching on in Aus
tralia by leaps and bounds. It was
begun here during the war and was
spurred on by the Olympic contests
here in 1956.
Personally, it is good to see the
sport growing so fast out here. It
has an amateur spirit which is not
found as much as it should be any
where. They just play for the fun
of it, and they play hard. In my
opinion that is a good combination
for any sport.
Until next time, Cheerio!
Robbie.

A student brought me some rose
foliage recently which showed dis
tinct signs of nitrogen deficiency,
expressed as a pale green leaf col
or. Roses are heavy feeders and
should be fertilized once a month
with an 8-8-8 fertilizer until about
August 1.
Use 2 to 3 pounds per 100 square
feet. Keep plants well mulched
with pine needles, ground corn
cobs or ground peanut hulls, and
thoroughly sprayed, or dusted, to
protect against insect and disease
pests. Irrigate as needed.
In the vegetable garden, keep up
the fight against weeds and insect
and disease pests. Make succession
plantings of such crops as snap
beans and sweet corn. In prepara
tion for the fall garden, plant seed
of cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes and
collards. This should be done be
tween June 15 and July 1 for the
Piedmont area.
Sow the seed in flats and place
them in light shade where they can
be easily watered. A good mixture
is one-third peat moss, one-third
clean sharp sand and one-third good
garden soil (or well decomposed
compost), by volume. To prevent
“damping-off” fungus, the sand and
soil should be sterilized. This can
be done by heating in an oven for
one hour at 210 degrees.
When the plants are large
enough to handle, it is desirable to
transplant them to bands, or small
pots, using good garden soil or com
post, as suggested. Setting in the
field from bands or pots practical
ly eliminates the shock of trans
planting and will hasten maturity
of the crop.
