Friday, June 12, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Five I Ai Seen in Hm Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events It’s £^ood news to hear that ponald Smith will he teaching ten nis lessons to interested New Bemians of all ages during coming weeks. Most folks think of the diminu; tive professor only in terms of mu sic. Considering the excellence of bis choral groups at New Bern High school, that’s understandable. How ever, he knows his way around in tennis and softball too. Usually, an athlete as small as Smith has to have speed to make up for a lack of bfawii. He has that swiftness of movement, and good reflexes. There has long been a great need for tennis instruction here. The absence of it has been reflected in the lag of interest in the sport. Our guess is that Donald is just the man to give it the fmpetus it deserves. No New Bern supporter of the New York Yankees has been more miserable than Harry Elefante dur ing the period that the World Champions were trying to snap out of their slump. A native of Greece, he has been a rabid baseball fan ever since he came to America a few years ago, and went to work at Williams restaurant. Whenever he gets the Williams' 66 Ser. Since he works the counter at his place of employment, and has never been one to conceal his ad miration for the Yanks, he was given an unmerciful ribbing while the ball club he literally worships was being clobbered by every team it met. 1 Customers at the restaurant eased up on Harry, after Casey Stengel’s outfit showed definite signs of reviving. It could well be that the little Greek will have the last laugh after all.
