Wonders About the World
The author of the following has
just graduated as elass Valedietori-
an from the Banks, Oregon, High
school. This was her Valedictory
address.
HAVE WE THE STRENGTH?
By Sabine Andrea Hofer
As we emerge from our comfort
able cradle of adolescence we are
facing something that no genera
tion has ever faced before. It has
crept upon you, our- parents, so
slowly that you have been able to
build up a protective barrier
around yourselves. Are you hiding
behind your wall of comfortable
traditions and American ideals, or
will you tear down that wall of
complacency and use our American
ideals, of which we are so proud,
as a weapon against our enemies?
You have given us love, under
standing and guidance. You have
also given us the most wonderful
country in the world in the most
enlightened age since life came to
earth. For this we humbly thank
you. But you have also given us
something that is hard to face: the
fact that we are living under a
shadow of danger. Our soft rug
may be jerked out from under us
at any moment. We may fall so
hard that the earth can never re
cover from the shock. We may wit
ness the most terrible and total de
struction that the world has ever
seen.
Yes, you have given us all of this
and more; but have you given us
the strength to face the world
you have given us? Can we sur
vive a battle for our way of life
that will make the two world wars
seem like a tea party? Are we
mentally strcmg enough to face this
war of nerves? When the chips are
down can we work together toward
a common goal despite personal
selfishness and prejudice? Do we
have a sense of values and do we
know what we are fighting for? Do
we dare think?
Throughout history the forces of
good and evil have been in con
stant turmoil. Now these battles
seem like minor skirmishes. To
day two powerful monsters have
gathered their forces for the pur
poses of destruction. They are
separated only by a narrow strip
of water as they pace restlessly
back and forth, snarling insults at
each other.
We, the newest generation, may
be criticized for having too much
handed to us on a silver platter.
We are able to have many material
things which our parents could
never hope to have had at our
ages. Perhaps we are living in an
age of luxury. But beneath our soft
seat of luxury lies a horrible time
bomb that quietly ticks off the min
utes and seconds—the seconds un
til the moment when we become

complacent or lax. When that time
comes life as we know it will end.
No. The world you have given
us upon your silver platter is far
from a life of ease. Do you dare
to think? You have given us the
destiny of the world on your silver
platter; and we do dare to think:
we are not the “beat generation”—
we have just begun to fight. With

ourselves against Fascism without
ourselves becoming Fascists. They
will tell us that we cannot assert
our belief in the institutions of a
free society and our intention to
defend them, without. . .becoming
ourselves burners of books and re-
gimenters of men’s minds. We can
believe them if we wish. But if
we do believe them we will have
lost not only our courage but our
common sense.”
SELF DISCIPLINE
Contentment comes to the man
who has the ability to make what
he gets fit his desires.
The fellow who always goes high
will have plenty of elbow room.

^^Sixth Sense’*
Warns Drivers
Of Trouble
By Martha Johnson,
Dodge Safety Consultant
BOASTING some of the fin
est safety records on the high
ways, drivers of trailer trudu
credit much of their driving abil
ity to the development of a
“sixth sense” about trouble on
the road ahead.
Almost any veteran truck
driver can tell of how a premo
nition prompted him to slow
down, thus saving him from an
accident around a curve or over
the crest of a hill.
Actually, this sixth sense can
be developed by any driver. It
merely is an outgrowth of a cau
tious attitude.
Start asking yourself, as you
drive along, “What if there is
an accident just beyond that
curve?” or “What would I do if
a child ran out from between
those parked cars ahead?”
As you think of these possi
bilities, you will automatically
become more cautious; you wiU
reduce your slopping time by
several vital seconds because you
have planned your reactions.
Soon you will notice that this
mental preparation has mads
you a mu» better and safer
driver, too.

Where are your tax dollars going ?
A good many of them are going for federal "public power.”
$5,500,000,000 in tax money has already been spent for “public power”
electricity projects in certain areas of the U. S.—and the “public power”
pressure groups want $10,000,000,000 more.
Yet this spending of your tax money is completely unnecessary. Inde
pendent electric companies like yours are ready and able to provide all
the electricity Ehe nation needs... without depending on your tax money.
Don’t you think needless spending for federal “public power” should stop?
