SPORTS
Things are going at a red hot
face in New Bern’s Sunday school
league, what with 15 teams gun
ning for championship honors. Suc
cess of the loop is a tribute to the
adults who are lending a hand, and
to the kids who are coming up
with an exciting brand of baseball.
There’s plenty of spirit too
among the five teams comprising
the Pony League. To see for your
self, head for Fort Totten or the
City Recreation Center on these
June nights. You’|ll be entertained,
and the players and coaches will
appreciate your interest.

Everyone in town ought to know
how to swim, although it’s sur

can’t keep afloat. Certainly, it’s an
injustice and downright dangerous
not to see to it that your children
are able to take care of themselves
in deep water.
A four-weeks swimming class—
sponsored by the Recreation De
partment—gets underway here on
Monday, June 22. A second class
will follow on July 20. The instruc-
A New Bern fan wants to know
if it’s true that the local Bears and
Goldsboro once used a total of nine
pitchers in a Coastal Plain League
ball game. Yes, it happened on
May 19, 1938. There were 33 hits
in all, and the Goldbugs finally
won the contest 17 to 14.
In answer to another query, it’s
also true that Bill Ferebee hurled
two no-hitters during his profes
sional baseball career. The first
'was for Selma, Ala., in the South
eastern League, and later the
lanky home town athlete duplicat
ed his feat with the Raleigh Caps
in the Piedmont League.
