Current interest in baseball
among New Bern’s small fry ought
to eventually pay dividends for the
high school Bruins in Northeastern
conference competition.
It is no secret that one of the
big reasons for the disastrous sea
son experienced by Coach Sam
Arbes in trying to come up with a
winning combination this year was
inexperienced players. The earlier
a youngster gets started, the bet
ter chance he has to develop into
a polished performer.
Losing consistently was embar
rassing to a fellow as conscientious
and hard working as Sam is. At
that, we doubt that he felt as badly
as did a certain Coastal Plain
lunpire, 25 years ago.
Thirteen baseknocks and 13
strikeouts on the 13th day of June
set the scene for Red Guthrie’s un
happy moment. New Bern and Kin
ston were playing at Grainger Park
and it was Guthrie’s first game as
an umpire.
Bending over to call a strike,
from his vantage point behind
home plate, he ripped an impres
sive gap in the most important
part of his trousers. Dignity at sufh
a time has its limitations, especial
ly when an overflow holiday crowd
is roaring with laughter at you.
The rookie umpire was a spunky
soul. He proceeded cautiously
through the remainder of the sixth
inning, then spurted for the Kin
ston dug-out. Manager Bunn Hearn,
as kindly an individual as ever
graced the national pastime, made
some hurried repairs on the torn
pants, and the game continued
wiJLfaeilt further delay. i

bered them 10 to 0. Fans didn’t
pay much attention to the game,
however. They got their suspense
waiting for Hearn’s patching job
to give way. But Guthrie was care
ful not to do any more bending,
and his britches remained intact.

Dept, of Motor Vehicles. State of North Carolina
TESTERS . . . Most of the auto
accessories owners attach to their
cars must be approved by the De
partment of Motor Vehicles. This
little heard about function is con
ducted by the Driver Education and
Accident Records Division, headed
by Dr. Wallace N. Hyde.
Since 1937 manufacturers of cer
tain extra equipment for cars have
been required to submit their items
for examination.
Brake fluid, emergency warning
lights, fog lamps, stop and turn sig
nals, safety glass, seat belts and
windshield wiper mechanisms are
a few of the accessories requiring
approval.
Each must meet requirements set
by a number of qualified testing
laboratories, most notable of which
would be either the Society of Au
tomotive Engineers or the U. S.
Bureau of Standards.
Specialists in the division com
pare the submitted item against the
qualified lab report. An approval
for sale in North Carolina follows
if it checks out.
In a recent year 224 items of
equipment were submitted to the
department for approval. Most of
them were okayed.
Mufflers are not on the list. But
hot rodders, believing the depart
ment has some say so, constantly
write in with complaints about the
glass-packed or Hollywood-type
muffler. Such muffler, while effi
cient from a technical standpoint,
are considerably noiser than stand
ard mufflers.
And although they are legally
sold in many auto accessory stores
and garages, installation has trig
gered a number of court cases in
which owners were charged with
“improper mufflers.’’
Owners reason, and not without
some logic, if such mufflers can be
sold there ought to be no question
as to using them. Officially, though,
the department of Motor Vehicles
remain silent on the issue.
Ollie Griffin, assistant head of
the approval staff, remarks, “To be
on the safe side it would be wise
to secure a replacement muffler
identical with the one originally in
stalled.’’
But original equipment mufflers
don’t growl like the Hollywood-
type. Shucks.
