Page Fhr« I ia Umi IMrfQi^t SPORTS ef AllilalM •nd Evantt Playing softball in a city Recrea tion League is a far cry from Uie Coastal Plain League baseball that Billy Bevil, Bill Price ani Graham Stilley once knew. Yet, the three of them are putting everything they’ve got in it. Proof once more that few athletes ever reach an age where the competitive spirit is ffone from their system. Red Derda, who took up bak ing when he ended his career in professional ball, has the. best of reasons when he pulls for the De troit Tigers. Derda hails from the Motor City, and would like noth ing better than a World Series va cation in the old home town. « ♦ * * Some of Babe Ruth’s happiest hunting days were spent in the Havelock area, so the Bambino would be happy if he knew that one of the liveliest Babe Ruth Leagues in the nation is in that fast growing Craven community. * • * * Wonder how lonesome Coach Sam Arbes feels, with those vacan cies cropping vp on the Neyv Bern High school sports staff? You can hardly blame any athletic mentor who leaves for better opportunities but it’s no secret that departures of this sort during the summer season puts 'any school in a sweat. * • * * East Carolina is hoping to come up with a ball carrier who will duplicate the fine gridiron play of New Bern’s Lee Atkinson’ during his senior year at the Greenville college. Lee, plagued by injuries, bloomed late but closed out his career in a blaze of glory. ♦ • * » New Bern fans who want to see Charlie Davis in varsity action for Jim Tatum’s Tar Heels this fall will get their wish without much delay. Carolina is counting on the converted New Bern fullback for heavy duty as an end in his sopho more year. TrU'Tread Tire Co. U. S.
