•IN NEW BERN TODAY
Oukie Watson’s tragic death has
made it a sad week for New Bern
teen agers. Each of us had reason
to remember him pleasantly for
one reason or another.
However, we think one of tlie
nicest things said about him came
from a boy who played basketball
under him in the kid league at the
City Recreation Center a couple of
y‘ars ago.
■‘I couldn’t play worth a toot,"
the little fellow admitted, “but he
always let me get into the games.
Whether W'e were winning or
losing, he gave me a chance.” •
No life has been lived in vain,
when ,iust one boy—or maybe
several—can remember that there

once was a coach—a teen age
coach—w'ho considered it more im
portant to encourage bench warm
ers than achieve victory.
What have you been doing dur
ing the terribly hot days? If you're
like us, you spent all the time you
could in swimming at Trent Pines,
the Country Club, or down at the
beach.
By the way, we haven’t heard
very much this summer about
teen-agers fishing. They’re doing a
lot of boating and xvater skiing,
but there doesn’t seem to be a
great deal of interest in trying our
luck with the finny tribe.
We’re probably missing out on a
lot of fun. Fishing has been go^d,
especially ocean fishing. Could it
be that we’re just too lazy to go to
the trouble?
Please be careful, if you’re going
somewhere during the Fourth of
July weekend. Traffic will be very
heavy, and the National Safety
Council is making some awful pre
dictions about the number of fatali
ties we can expect on highways.
Unfortunately, these predictions by
the Council are almost always ac
curate.
And another thing. If you don’t
already have a good tan, look out
for sunburn.

READY FOR THE FOURTH—Independence Day calls for
firecrackers, according to tradition. In keeping with the
occasion, Zylphia Ann Wooten is all set to light New Bern’s
biggest one yet. It ought to cause quite a stir for miles

WEALTH UNTOLD
Precious things of wealth untold.
Stores of silver and of gold,
God hides oft within the ground.
Till by seeking they are found,
In His Word He's hidden, too*
Riches that He means for you.
Search the Scripture’s precious store
As the miner digs for ore.
Finding wisdom not of earth,
Far above a ruby's worth.
Search, and you will surely find
Treasures to enrich the mind,
Search the Scriptures every day.
Search, and find there hidden away.
Like a pearl within its shell,
Promises that fears dispel.
Search, and find God's words impart
Treasures to enrich the heart.
Search the Scriptures, finding there
Christ, its chiefest Treasure rare
Through whom God makes wealth abound
In each life where He is found.
Search, and find what Christ will do
To enrich all life for you,
