“They that go down to the sea
in ships, that do^business in great
waters; These see the works of the
Lord, and His wonders in the deep.
For He commandeth, and raiseth
the, stormy wiiid, which lifteth up
the waves thereof. They mount up
to the heaven, they go down again
to the depths: their soul is melted
because of trouble.
. They reel to and fro, and stagger
like a drunken man, and are at
their wit’s end. Then they cry unto
the Lord in their trouble, and he
bringeth them out of their distress
es, He maketh the storm a calm, so
that the waves thereof are still.
Then are they glad because they be
quiet; so he bringeth them unto
their desired haven.” Psalm 107;
23-30.
During the dry season, keep all
shrubbery and plants watered. It
is best tp water a few times and
water them well than often^and
water sparingly. Always water in
daytime as this prevents mildew on
the foliage. Mulch shrubbery to
protect the roots. Berry producing
shrubs have to have a sufficient
amount of water to keep the ber
ries.
See that the birds have plenty
of water for bathing purposes.
They like clear clean water.

Keep borers out of iris. Lime
does not keep them away. They
live in the foliage. If the roots
are exposed to the sun—they will
not have the rot.
Soap or nicotine sulfate will kill
thrips in iris. Thrips thrive in hot
weather. If you have nemotades in
your iris—throw away your plants
and start in a new section that
hasn’t had nematodes in it. After
you grow a cereal crop on your
soil it will correct this condition.
When larkspur turns brown' and
rots at the root it ’has Southern
rot, destroy all plants.
When lilies turn brown and flop
down, it is called limber neck. No
one knows much about it.
The Brook
I come from haunts of coot and
bern,
I make a sudden sally.
And sparkle out anjong the fern.
To bicker down a valley.
Till last by Phillip’s farm I. flow
To join the brimming river.
For men may come and men may
go,
But I go on forever.
With many a curve my Lambs, I
fret
By many a field and fallow.
Are many a fairy foreland set
With willow-weed and mallow.
I wind about and in and out.
With here a blossom sailing, ,,
^^nd here and there a lusty trout,^:
, And here and there a grayling.
I steal by lawns and grassy plots,
I slide by hazel covers;
I move the sweet forget-me-nots
That grow for happy lovers.
I murmur under moon and stars.
In brambly wilderness;
I linger by my shingly bars,
I loiter round my cresses.
And out again I curve and flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may
go.
But I will go on forever.

Nutrition Nuggets
For Your MeaItime
There’s a veritable gold mine of
nutrition and economy at food
counters across the state now, and
it will last several weeks.
You don’t need to do a lot of
hard digging to unearth treasure
from eggs, to bring it refined and
gleaming to the table at meal time,
snack time or anytime.
Miss Jo Earp, nutritipn specialist
for the N. C. Agricultural Exten
sion Service, says that the golden
egg contains “pure nuggets of nu
trition and pleasurable eating. Eggs
can weld the ingredients for im
pressive cakes, pastries, custards,
or puddings.
“Summer. nrieals, picnics, and
snacks of eggs alone, or in combi
nation with 'mflk arid dairy' prod'-
ucts, fresh vegetables, meats and
fish provide added protein, yet are
light and appealing to hot-weather
appetites. Eggs boast health-protect
ing A, B and D vitamins, and the
yOlk holds a rich store of iron, some
phosphorus, and other needed min
erals.” Use eggs with a lavish hand
during this period of seasonal
abundance, advises Miss Earp.
Small causes are sufficient to
make many a man uneasy, when
great ones are not in the way. FOr
want of a block, he will stumble at
a straw. — Swift.

Our congratulations to the New
Bern Public Library for coming
up with a clever idea to increase
summer-reading among the town’s
small fry.
A make believe tree—11 feet
tall — has been rigged up, and
evei^ time a child reads a book
he or she gets to hang a leaf on
the tree with his or her name
signed to it.
In order to qualify for a leaf, the
moppet has to give a book review.
That in itself is excellent training,
since a tot of us parents aren’t too
adept at presenting such a review.
At last report, no less than 264
children between the first and si\
grades had registered for this tree
gimmick. Believe it or not, one
little girl has already read and
reported on 51 books.
Most of the youngsters fall well
below that mark, but collectively
they have hung so many leaves on
the tree that it is sporting an
abundance of foliage. Judging by
existing enthusiasm, the librarian
tnay have to put up another tree,
or establish a small forest.
Incidentally, your child would
no doubt enjoy the story hour at
the library each Wednesday after
noon at 3:30. It’s efficiently con
ducted, and kids attending are
finding it delightful and intriguing.
You probably don’t need to be
reminded that Walt Disney’s
“Sleeping Beauty” is opening its
run at the-Kehoe today. Our guess
is you’ve heard nothing else for
days.
Like other Disney productions,
his latest work of art has universal
appeal. Adults—especially those of
us approaching second childhood—
will find it just as appealing as
the small fry who are looking for
ward to seeing it.
In wact, we’re inclined to think
that parents would be showing
wisdom if they went to the movies
oftener with their children, to
share the pleasure of good films.
Your local theatres do show such
films, and it’s up to us to take ad
vantage of them.
Among mortals second thoughts
are wisest.—Euripides.
