IN NEW BERN TODAY
Any New Bern adult who has
hopes of rock ‘n’ roll losing its
popularity may have a long time to
wait. A teen-age survey here, with
representative high school and col
lege students as guinea pigs, in
dicates no decline at all in the
overwhelming choice of this type
of music.
According to the New Bern Pub
lic Library, there's a long waiting
list there for Pat Boone’s best-sell
ing book “Twixt Twelve and Twen
ty.” It’s certainly a volume that
no one would find objectional ^pr
young people.
In fact, we understand that the
Church of God at Goldsboro has
sent copies to 15 public and school
libraries in Wayne county. Parents
and others often criticize our
tastes—maybe with good reasons—
but we think it’s a credit to us that
we find Pat Boone’s book interest
ing and informative reading.
Martha Gillikin, a NBHS gradu
ate of 1958 and rising sophomore
at Woman’s College in Greensboro,
probably has a lot of memories
passing through her head this sum
mer. She is employed in the prin
cipal’s office at New Bern high,
and we’re quite sure that this quite
attractive young lady is recalling
some of the good times she once
had in this very same school

MISS LUCIA -
(Continued fromi Page 1)
of the Martin county Young Demo
crats from 1955 to 1958; and a lead
er in other civic activities.
As a Boy Scout leader from 1953
to 1955, he had the distinction of
producing four Eagle Scouts in a
single year. Since 1955 he has been
a member of the Boy Scout coun
cil.
What’s more, he is commanding
officer of the Williamston Natiortal
Guard unit, is a deacon in the First
Christian church, and teaches a
Sunday school class there. How he
gets around to all of these things
is a mystery, but he accomplish
es them quietly and efficiently.
In fact, he is so adept at coordi
nating his many activities, and
handles them so smoothly, that at
first glance you get the impression
that he is slow and easy going.
Junie does have the temperament
of an easy-going man, but in truth
he is the calm core of an activity-
packed whirlwind.
For one so busy with outside
interests, it is hard to conceive
that he manages to be a devoted
father and husband. He and Lucia
have a great deal in common, and
the two of them are completely
wrapped up in the affection they
shower on their little daughter,
Lucia Claire.
Now you know why “Miss Lucia”
—television’s most popular figure
in eastern North Carolina—didn’t
hesitate to give up the limelight
and become simply Mrs. Elbert

Sermonette
By G. A. HOWELL
“And there were certain Greeks
among them that came up to wor
ship at the feast. The same came
therefore to Philip which was Beth-
saida of Galillee, and desired him,
saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.”
(John 12:20, 21)
One day at the Feast of Pass-
over in Jerusalem a group of Gen
tiles came to Philip and desired to
see Jesus. Therefore, the things I
write about today will be some of
the characteristics ot the One
Whom they sought.
Jesus was born of poor parents
in an animal shelter. He was wrap
ped in swaddling clothes and laid
in a manger. He worked in Jo
seph’s carpenter shop. He never
wrote a book. Yet there has been
many books written about Him. One
writer said that he supposed that
if all the things that Jesus did were
written, that the world itself would
not be able to hold the books that
should be written.
Jesus never owned a home, held
a public office, nor traveled 200
miles from His birthplace. He never
did the things that people think go
along with greatness.
He was anointed of the Holy
Ghgst and went about healing the
sick and doing good. Yet in all this
the religious leaders of His day
took Him to trial. They demanded
His death and received it. He died
on a cross for you and me between
two thieves. After He had died, He
was buried in another’s tomb.
Thank God. the grave could not
hold Him and now today He is in
heaven at our Father’s right hand.
Many years have passed since
Jesus walked the shores of Galilee
but there has never been an army,
navy, parliament, king, or president
(with all their efforts combined)
that affected the world like- this
One Solitary Person.
These are characteristics of the
“actual man” whom the Gentites
sought.
