MAMIE MIUER
“God that made the world and
all things therein, seeing that He
is Lord of heaven and earth, dwel-
leth not in temples made with
hands; Neither is worshipped with
men’s hands, as though he needed
anything, seeing he giveth us all
life, and breath, and all things.”
Acts 17:34-25.
One of the prettier trees that we
have in June is the Golden Chain
tree. It has a cluster pea like blos
som and makes a nice shady lawn
tree. We have a few of these trees
in New Bern.
The Chaste tree is a' beautiful
blue and should be included in
your lawn planting. It needs a good
soil, and plenty of sunshine. It also
comes in white.
The Rose of Sharon or Althea
tree is .very prolific in this section.
It is a Chinese shrub and thrives
most anyvyhere. ■ They come in
many colors. One of the most
popular colors is purple or lilac,
white is very popular too.
■The Montbretias are very beauti
ful, they are very much like a
gladioli. Much sunshine and ferti
lizer is required for these. There
is a wide variety of colors. Usually
they are shades of gold, orange and
yellows. '
Four o’clocks are very vragrant.
They usually come in yellow,
orange and pink varigated. They
are blossoms that you may tell
the time of day. They are known
as a clock bloom.
Penny plants should stay green
all summer—cut the foliage back
ill October.
If something eats the stems of
your petunia plants, dust them
with sulphur lead arsenate.
If your Pyracantha drops iCs
leaves and berries it probably has
lace bugs. Spray with some insecti
cide. These usually start in late
June.

HOW DOTH THE LITTLE
BUSY BEE
How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour
And gather honey all the day
From every passing flower!
How skillfully she builds her cell;
How neat she. spreads the wax!
And labours hard to store it well
With the sweet food she makes.

ed masking tape on the back. The
plateis pull away easily when pick
ed up. They are available in white,
colors, and patterns in 8 and 9-
inch sizes.
Also, paper napkins now are be
ing packaged in a box which con
verts into a pair of self-service ta
ble dispensers.'The box is perforat

easily into two sections. Each sec
tion contains 25 folded napkins;
opening at top is wide; sq they’re
easy to remove.
ALWAYS K51EP EGGS REFRIG
ERATED—If you buy eggs be sure
to buy from dealers who keep them
ill refrigerated display cases. If
you-sell eggs you’ll profit by keep
ing them refrigerated or in a cool
place. Heat rapidly lowers egg qual
ity. Eggs left four days in a warm
store or kitchen (70 to 80 degree
F.) lose as much freshness as those
kept several weeks in a refrigera
tor.
EVAPORATED MILK STORAGE
—Opened cans of evaporated milk
should be given the same care in
the home as pasteurized milk; that
is, it should be kept in the coldest
part of the refrigerator. Its keep
ing time depends upon the tempera
ture of storage, but it is recom
mended that the contents be con
sumed within four or five days.
GRATED CHEESE—Cheese that
has become dry—especially Ched
dar, Swiss and Italian varieties—
may be grated and kept in a cover
ed container in the refrigerator.
Use within a few days to avoid
change in flavor which results
from exposure to air.

backyard, a table and benches in a
nearby park, a favorite nook beside
a lake or stream are welcome places
for eating on hot summer days.
For outdoor cooking you may
need special equipment unless an
outdoor fireplace is available. The
popular wiener roast requires lit
tle equipment and can be fun. Take
plenty of food, but not too many
varieties.
Decide whethm' you wikh, to pre
pare food and pack it at home or
cook it on the spot. This equipment
will help in packing the food;
Thermos jug or bottle for hot or
cold beverages; trays or plastic-
lined basket; container with ice if
bottled drinks are used. You will
need waxed paper, foil for wrap
ping foods, sharp knife for slicing
pickles or tomatoes, a knife for
spreading, can opener, paper nap
kins, plates, cups and towels, news
paper and matches to start the fire.
COOK-DUT SUGGES-nONS — If
you and-your neighbors are having
a cooperative cook-out, here are
suggestions for “contributions.” A
hot and bubbly casserole of toma
toes and lima beans, or a pot of
your favorite home baked beans, or
pothto salad‘ to go with fried chick
en, hot dogs, or hamburgers. Or
you might like to take foil-wrapped
baking potatoes; foil-packaged, sea
soned and buttered vegetables; foil-
cased roasting eai-s—all ready for
outdoor cooking.
Outdoor cooking equipment need
not be expensive or elaborate. In
fact, any number of make-dos are
possible from a few bricks or
stones for a base on which to, lay
a broiler or grill over coals, all the
way to an electric barbecue or ro-
tisserie outfit.

Proper toothbrushing and home
care is the most valuable single
thing an individual can do for the
prevention of dental decay and
dental- disease. Good home care
means proper toothbrushing in
the right way at the right time,
and cautious consumption of sweets
are highly recommended in main-
taiiiing sound and healthy teeth.
A child should begin to brush
his teeth between the. ages of two-
and-a-half and three years, or as
soon as his first set of 20 teeth
have erupted. At first on a small
child, parents should do the actual
job of brushing. It is very impor
tant to establish toothbrushing hab
its at an’early age.
There is no “miracle” tooth
paste. There is no adequate evi
dence to substantiate the claims
made by tooth paste companies.
The method of toothbrushing is far
more important than the kind of
looth paste used. In order to make
the toothbrushing routine enjoy
able for children, use a tooth paste
with a pleasant taste.
The teeth should be brushed im
mediately after each meal or snack.
The old theory of morning and eve
ning toothbrushing is no longer
accepted. All surfaces of the teeth
should be brushed at least five
times. The upper stroke should be
downward toward the teeth and
the lower teeth brushed upward.
The brush should be scaled to
the child’s mouth. The head of the
brush should be small enough to
reach all sections of the mouth
with ease. The function of a tooth
brush, if properly used, is to re
move food from surfaces of the

teeth and gum line. Sugar in food
particles combined with mouth bac
teria form decay producing acids
if not removed.
Toothbrushing is the major home
weapon against tooth decay, along
with strict control over the
amount of sweets a child is allow
ed to have.

with responsibility.
