Donald Lamb’s selection for an
end position in North Carolina’s
annual East-West football game at
Greensboro tonight is a tribute to
his ability to surmount a handi
cap.
The rangy Bruin flankman has
faulty vision, and his success in
catching passes is an indication of
his quick reflexes. Snagging a foot
ball on the run is tricky business
at best, and it’s doubly difficult
when your eyesight can’t compare
with that possessed by other ath
letes.
Not only did the New Bern High
school graduate do alright on the
gridiron, but managed to hold his
own in basketball too. Donald isn’t
the first youngster to excej in
sports under such circumstances.
However, his case is worthy of
special mention.
Incidentally, there’s another New
Bern angle to the All-Star game
that has been overlooked in most
quarters. Wilmington’s sensational
passer. Leon Brogden Jr., is the
son of the selfsame Leon Brogden
who once played baseball for the
New Bern Bears.
Brogden held down third base in
the era that saw such home town
stars as the Ferebee boys, Claude

Kafer Park diamond.
It should be quite a thrill to the
coach of the Wilmington Wildcats
to have his own son hailed for set
ting new North Carolina records
for passes completed, the highest
percentage completed, and total
passing yardage gained.
Leon, no doubt, was dreaming of
such an eventuality the night that
New Bern’s Preacher Parker—a
freshman at the time—slaughtered
his New Hanover lads with three
quick touchdowns in the opening
quarter of a tremendous upset.
Now it’s Leon Jr. in the butcher’s
role.

Holy Evangelist of Almighty God,

omas A. Green of the county of

Green, and John Davis of said
county were taken prisoners of
war together during the Revolu-

Charleston (1780) and that he, the
said Green, w-as separated from
the said Davis and that he never
saw the said Davis after the said
separation, and did not know what
became of him, except from gen

that he was whipped to death in

states that he has frequently heard
Thomas Davis say that his brother,

On a British Man of War. Deponent
further states that he heard Cap
tain Richard Carter say that he was
{(‘prisoner of war during the Revo
lution, and was imprisoned on
board a British Man of War with
one John Davis; that the Master
of the ship tried to make the Amer

ship, and that the said John Davis,
who was an American, peremptori
ly refused; whereupon the said
Davis was severely whipped . . . .
and he died, that he, the said Cart

Deponent further says that the
said Green and Carter died many
years ago; that they were men of
truth, and that he believes that
their statements were true, and
that he has no interest whatever
in making this deposition.”

MEDITATION
Man is born of a creative spirit.
As a child he feels near to God,
and is guided constantly by this
spirit.
He has an investigative mind-
his curiosity helps him come upon
the beauties of God’s handiwork.
He enters onto new plateaus with
courage, and displays tremendous
ability, perserverance and most al
ways is successful. He plays where
even angels fear to trod.
Why is it that as he grows older
his burdens of livelihood rob him
of his glorious gift, and he loses
contact with this spirit? Could he
tune in once more? I wonder. —

James Davis established the first
printing press in North Carolina in
New Bern, at foot of Broad street,
in 1749, and was the first public
printer.
It is said that Davis, after his
first whipping, was taken in a boat
to the side of every ship in the
fleet and given 15 lashes at each
one, was then returned to the pris
on ship and told if he vvould draw
a bucket of water from the ship’s
side they would cease the whip
ping. He replied, ‘If His Majesty’s
whole Navy was on fire, and that
one bucket of water drawn by him
would extinguish the flames, he
would not draw it.’ The flogging
was then resumed and continued
