Friday, August 7, 195§ Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY "What will niy roommate be like?” That’s the big question that many of our New Bern High school graduates, and other High school graduates in Craven county, are ctiicfly concerned with as they ore- tv re to enter tile coliege of their cfioice. And elsewhere, prospective f'e.shmcn who have been assigned rooms with our local teen agers are vvondering the same thing. Fortunately, in the great majori ty of cases the results range from ■satisfactory to delightful. The average boy or girl who is lucky enough to go to college is serious about getting an education, so you and your roommate are apt to have that much in common. And because of this seriousness of purpose it is a foregone con clusion that the two of you will try to work out an arrangement for You'll Find a Variety of Tropical Fish at Pittman"s Aquadum 137 Middle Street L. Tile adjustment may take time, but unless one or both of you happen to be overly selfish it is a prolilem that can be solved without too much difficulty. Consideration Is ot utmost im portance. Neither roommate has the right to distract the other dur ing study sessions, and it is wise if pos.sible for them to arrange identical hours for study. Other wise. one of them may be studying late at night or eariy in the morning, while the other room mate is trying to sleep. Of course, there are other things besides studying that will require understanding. Every’ freshman hopes that his or her roommate will have something in common with them socially. If they like the same type of music, the same sports and other things, the adjust ment should be easier. Even if their interests differ, there is no reason why they can’t be congenial. In fact, one of the helpful things about college is an opportunity to get out of the rut that oim own narrow interests may have us in. n Wherever thirsty (people sre .J* ^ JEANNINE — (Continued ffom Fage 1) pocketbooks. She even takes them to bed with her in the manner that other children cling to their fav orite toys. She refuses to part with any of the pocketbooks in her collection. Inasmuch as some of them are in a sad state of repair, this is rather disconcerting to other members of the household. For pets, she has two tomcats named Tom and Jerry. “We got them as kittens when the children had chickenpox,” Milton and Peg gy recall. “Now the kittens have INVITING THE SUN—This week’s Mirror Maid is dark-eyed Dale Walker, a 15-year- old rising sophomore at New Bern High. In addition to Jeannine, the Lang stons have two more children, Mil- ton III, 7, and Cheryl Randall, 5. Cheryl was born on Milton’s second birthday, which is another inter esting angle on the Langston story. Jeannine isn’t one to lose her temper, when she doesn’t get her way. Falling back on the determi nation that saved her life, she bides her time and wears down the opposition that blocks her path. “She never forgets anything,” Peggy admits ruefully. “It may take weeks to do it, but eventually she achieves her objective.” All things considered, Jeannine is no better nor worse behaved than other children her age. She is a television fan, and it is worthy of note that she appreciates the graceful movement of outstanding dancers and the excellence of oper- ratic selections that are sung well. She has a definite flair for mu sic, and “caiTies a tune” very nice ly. At the moment, her chief am bition is to be a majorette. To say she is looking forward to starting to school is putting it mildly. And of course, she’ll show up on the campus befoi’e anyone else does on that hectic first day. Considering her past history, you would hardly expect her to be any thing but decidedly premature in her quest for an education.
