It is the season to find the different fruits and pods that no other time of the year can be seen. Take time to rest and relax while the sun is so hot. Many of the plants that may be gathered now to dry are straw flowers, cockcomb, bells of Ireland, artemisia and money plant. These may be dried by hanging up side down in an attic or closet. Grow Christmas peppers now for Christmas gifts. Apply dolomatic limestone for toad stools, puff balls and fairy rings in the lawn. Apply acti-dione, zinc or moneb for rust. To prevent nematodes, use Nema- gon or Nemakril. To pep up plants use Gremlin, vitamins for plant life. For tube roses to bloom, plant deeper than two inches. Plant pansy seed, they make nicer blooms than the others. Steele pansies are a favorite. While you rest, read this: RULES FOR THE ROAD Stand straight: Step firmly, throw your weight: The heaven is high above your head, The good gray road is faithful to your tread.^ Be strong: Sing to your heart a battle song: Though hidden foemen lie in wait. Something is in you that can smile at Fate. Press through: Nothing can harm if you are true. And wheft the night comes, rest: The earth is friendly as a mother’s breast. —Edwin Markham. It happened right her in New Bern, at the very old and very dig nified First Presbyterian church. And what made it all the more embrassing was the fact that the cat was Topsy, and belonged to the pastor, the Rev. J. Murphy Smith. Topsy follows him everywhere he goes, and members of the fami ly kept predicting that sooner or later what happened was going to happen. Right in the middle of the Sunday morning service she came down the aisle. If it had been the First Baptist church, Centenary Methodist, or some other New Bern church be sides the First Presbyterian, Topsy could have gone up in the pulpit. However, the pulpit at the First Presbyterian church is elevated, and has to be reached by going up some steps. It is enclosed. Since the cat couldn’t reach her master, it hopped on a table where the offering had been placed, and seemed quite curious about the size of the collection. Somebody certainly had to do something, so the parson’s 13-year- old son Johnny went down to the table, picked up Topsy and escort ed the_ family pet outside. Cats and dogs have been known to do such things before. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt died, a memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal church here. Included in the congregation was a stray dog that decided to come in. Roosevelt loved dogs—had two of his own—and would have appre ciated the occurrence here. After all, animals are part of God’s cre ation too. In fact. He arranged to have them present when Christ was born.
