IN NEW BERN TODAY
New Bern’s teen-agers are fill
ed with mixed emotions as the last
weeks of their summer vacation
rirau to a close.
Realizing all too well that swim
ming, boating and water skiing will
soon be over, tliey are trying to en
joy these pleasures to the full-
e.-it. Rain riu'tailod such activities
quite a bit this year, and mo.st of
the crowd hate been attempting to
make up for lost time.
Vet. the thought of getting back
to school is intriguing too. In oth
er words, we are always glad to
see vacation arrive, and almost
always glad to see it end.

our friends during the summer.
Many of them go out of town for
visits, attend camp.s or youth ses
sions held by their various
churches, or work. There are very
few occasions, if any. that a large
number of us get together.
On the other hand, the first
weeks or .school are rather excit
ing, M’e see new faces, including
those very cute freshmen who try
to hide their self con.sciousness.
Then there’s the thrill of seeing
the football team in action, and
getting our student organizations
under way. We are proud of the
versatile, well rounded program we
have at New Bern High school. We
don’t believe that the extra-curri-
lar activities hurt us scholastical
ly, and they do so much to help
our school spirit.
As we approach another school
year, we want to take time out to
wish every happiness and success
to the other high schools of Crav
en county. And we also extend
the same wish to Pamilco Central,
Jones Central, and the neighboring
high schools in Carteret. Onslow,
Lenoir and Pitt counties.
We know that they are just as
proud of their schools as we are
of ours, and they ha\e every right
to be. All of us have advantages
that our parents never had, and
we must make the most of them.

Rev. J. C. Griffin —
(Continued ft urn Page 1)
As for the gospel he preaches,
and the Bible from which it comes,
Griffin feels that it is as timely
today as it ever was. “The great
truths handed down to us by God
are eternal and will always apply,”
he says.
For quite a few years he has
kept a daily diary, but doesn’t keep
track of statistics. Along the way
he' has converted and baptized
multitude of folks, and joined
countless couples in holy wedlock.
It is doubtful that any other minis
ter in the State has conducted more
funerals.
Few people know what the two
initials—J. C.—stand for in his
name. “My first name is Jesse,” he
says, “and I just added the C. to
have a middle initial.” As it de
veloped, he didn’t need that middle
initial to make a name for himself
in his chosen field.
