Nothing sen'es better as a pre-
vue to Autumn than the sight of
young huskies limbering up for the
hard football grind ahead. It’s still
August, but Coach Sam Arbes and
his aspiring and perspiring New
Bern High school Bears know that
there’s no time to waste.
That the Bruins are in for tough
nights is a foregone conclusion. De
spite promising talent, the outfit
won’t find it easy to plug the holes
left by graduation. The team could
be good, may prove outstanding,
but at this stage doesn’t shape up
as a champion.
Coupled with this is the lament
able fact that Arbes not only has a
new set of assistants on his staff,
but assistants who lack experience
in the coaching field. Win or lose
this season, the job is pretty much
up to Sam. It’s a task that no head
coach would relish.
There’s one bright spot in the
picture. Chances are there’ll be

less underlying friction on the staff
than hithertofore. It’s no secret
that past relations in some in
stances were less than cordial, and
this situation didn’t help matters.
Whatever may be you opinion of
Arbes as a coach, let it be said
that you never have to guess where
he stands. Frankness in his case
may be a fault, but being frank is
more refreshing and certainty more
honest than underhanded back-bit-
ing.
In view of Sam’s experience, and
the lack of it among his new assist
ants, the least he can expect, we
would think, will be full cooperi^
tion from his staff. That at least iS
something, and it might turn out
to be a very important something.
One thing we can hope for is a
Junior Varsity program that will
be less concerned with winning,
and more concerned with develop
ing ball players. It is significant to
note that most of the Northeastern
teams than pin our ears back in
varsity competition don’t have all
winning JV elevens. Instead they
find it wise to give every prospect
a chance to play.

Think before you act may be a
good motto—but too many people
think and then fail to act.
Tt takee tbau the Me-
tance between goal poets on a
football field (100 yards) to stop
a ear traveling at 60 miles per
hour under the best driving con
ditions, 4-H Club members point
out. At 00 mph. a car travels 88
feet per second. There’s not
much "time” to come to a dead
stop npon approaching a tractor
or ether ttOfrer-movlng faroi
paachinery.
"Highway saffety is everyone^
besponsiblllty,’* 4-H leaders de
clare, and during the summer
when traffle is at Its peak the
obligation becomes greater. The
devastating fact that three oiit
of four traffle fatalities occur in
rhrAI areas makes the 4-H Safety
program the "number one crop’*
for nearly a million epnscient^
pm olub members.
Statistics reveal that there are
tnbre teen-age drivers en the
highways today than ewer before.
K Is also true that drivers under
20 years of age have a worse
safety record than older drlvera
So each 4-H boy and girl en
rolled in the safety project is
encouraged to become a "self-
policing committee of one.”
These 4-H’crs make certain that
the family car, truck, and trac-
tmr are in safe operating condi
tion at all times.
Pwr the past 15 years the 4-H
Safety program has been sup
ported nationally by General
Motors, which among other
things provides incentive awards
for top ranking club members in'
each state. The awards consist
it 1400 college scholarships, all
expense paid trips to the Na
tional 4-H Olub Congress in Chi
cago, medals of honor, and
plaques. The program is under
the direction of the Cooperative
Extension Service, United States
Department of Agriculture.
