IN NEW BERN TODAY
It was nice having Pat Turner
liack in town iast weekend. As most
of you probably know, she has
been working as a waitress at
Slyrtle Beach during the summer.
Like other members of our col
lege crowd, Pat isn’t fond of jump-
i ig out of bed in the morning. She
bad to shelve this notion at Myrtle
Beach, however, since her job de
manded that she get underway at
file bust of dawn.
“I’ve met a lot of wonderful peo
ple during the summer," she told
vs. “Many of them would strike up
fj conversation with me, and it was
a pleasure to talk to them.’’
Only once has she dropped some
thing. She told us what it was, but
for the life of us we can’t remem-
.ber whether it was a cup. a saucer
or a plate. Working at the South
Carolina resort has been good ex
perience for her, and that money is
going to come in handy when she
goes back to college.
Jo Carole McDaniel, who was di
rector of the Tryon Village play-
,ground this summer, was busy in
Durham last week. As fellowship
chairman for the 19.000 boys and

her stay she was on a television

If you haven’t seen the big black
bear on the New Bern High school
campus since school turned out,
you’ll be glad to know that he has
had a fresh coat of paint. Looks
just dandy. He is waiting to wel
come us back.
We’re prouder with each passing
day of the driver education pro
gram that has been provided for
our teenage drivers. It is gratifying
to see so many of our crowd taking
advantage of it.
A philosopher once said that we
should make hay while the sun
shines. Few of us are making ,hay,
but applying the same principle we
had better get our swimming done.
Autumn is just around the corner,
football practice is in full swing,
and school is beckoning. Excuse us
right now, we’re heading for Trent
Pines.

Veterans of any war or of sen ice
in the Korean-conflict period may
apply for hospitalization through
the nearest Veterans Administra
tion Office, VA said. The general
requirement is that the veteran’s
discharge or release from service
must have been under conditions
other than dishonorable.
VA listed the three priorities for
veterans seeking treatment in a
VA hospital as follows:
1. First priority goes to those
needing to be hospitalized because
of injuries or diseases incurred in
or aggravated by line of duty in
their active sendee during any war
or the Korean conflict period.
2. Second priority goes to veter
ans with service during any war or
the Korean conflict period who
were discharged or retired for dis
ability that they incurred in line
of duty, or who are receiving com
pensation payments for a service-
connected disability. Included also,
since January 1, 1959, are veterans
who would be eligible to receive
such compensation except for the
fact that they are getting retire
ment pay for service-connected dis
abilities, but who need hospitaT
treatment for some ailment not con
nected with their service. These
groups will be admitted under the
second class of priority, according
as beds may be available.
3. The third group consists of
veterans with seiwice during any
war or the Korean conflict period
who were not discharged for dis
ability and not having a compen
sable service-connected disability.
Such veterans may be admitted to
VA hospitals if the three follow-

World War II veterans have an
approaching deadline in 1960 that
marks the end of their GI loan
privilege. Veterans Administration
said.
July 25, 1960, a little less than a
year from now, is the cut-off date
for veterans of World War II in
making applications for GI loans.
VA said if the application is
made before that date, the veteran
still will have one year more, or
until July 25, 1961, to have the
loan deal completed.
Korean veterans have consider-;
ably longer before their GI loan
rights expire. Their deadline for
application does not come until
1965.
VA said Korean veterans have
also an important deadline affect
ing their GI training rights and
each Korean veteran has a differ
ent deadline. For each one the fi
nal deadline comes eight years
from the time of his discharge.
This is a final cut-off affecting
training rights, VA pointed out. A
veteran must actually complete his
GI training or education by that
time, since no further training can
be authorized after the individual’s
cut-off date.
Korean veterans also have a
deadline for commencing their GI
training, which is three years
from the date they were discharg
ed from active service.
