Unless we miss our guess, Coach
Sam Arbes of the New Bern High
school Bears is going to be plagued
by a familiar problem when his
football team meets Choppy Wag-
per’s Washington Pam-Pack on
September 18.
Wagner likes to send his backs
around the ends, and seldom
strives for real yardage through
the middle of the line. Year after
year, his strategy is the same. In
fact, it would be hard to recall a
time when he had an outstanding
fullback carrying the brunt of the
attack.
This year it eould be different
He has a squad of veterans, and
may elect to be more versatile in
formulating his offensive. Even so,

if his coaching runs true to form,
he’ll go to the outside early and
often.
Sam undoubtedly knows this, but
knowing it and stalling a fine set
of ball carriers like Choppy can
boast of is something else again.
Washington’s edge in experience,
and the fact that the Pam-Pack nev
er takes the New Bern game light
ly, will give the visitors a definite
advantage.
All is not dismal, however, for
the Bruins. Despite the loss of sev
eral stars, the team is apt to have
better balance this season. And
there’s always the chance that
some unsung hero will bob up to
spark the ball club to a successful
season.
Its co-captains, Joe Heath and
Cliffie Rowe, love to win and are
l(iound to impart a good share of
their spirit to teammates. That ojd
adage about the team that won’t be
beat can’t be beat isn’t entirely
true. Inferior teams usually lose,
regardless of the spirit engendered.
But it’s a cinch that the will to win
pays dividends for any outfit good
enough to stay in the ball game.
Before Washington, Morehead
City must be reckoned with. A de
cisive victory for the Bruins would
go a long way in giving them the
confidence they need.
