Duck—or Ducky as he was ;fcnown by 30 years ago—was one of Ihe best High school halfbacks to ever run wild on the gridiron at Kafer Park. He starred for a Tar- boro eleven that was strictly run of the mill, but his presence on the learn was enough to give the local Bears several unhappy afternoons. He never miss ed a dance here, and later booked bands for countless shindigs here and elsewhere. Even in his High school days, Lewis was a natural born promoter. Currently he is executive secretary of the North Carolina Motel As sociation, and you may rest as sured that he is beating the drums incessantly to^attract business for Tar Heel operators of these com paratively new roadside institu tions. r If you’ve been reading the front page of the News and Observer and other State papers, you know that Ducky was a star witness for the aforementioned murder trial. He got into the case the hard way. He happened to be guest in the home where the former wife of Thomas A. Stocks was staying when Stocks allegedly barged into the house, fired a bullet through Ducky’s body, and allegedly forced his ex-wife (Helen Edwards) to drive away with him. She was later found slain—sprawled on a sheet of ice in the chill December air.
