Watch Car Instruments
To A void Being Stranded
By Martha Johnson

So your neighbor ran out of gas the other day while purring
along the highway en route to visit her Mother.
That’ll never happen to youl
You’re right. It won’t. IF you play it smart.
It wouldn’t have happened to your neighbor, cithrr, if she was
a smart driver. If she was in the habit of periodically taking a
quirk check of all those gadgets and gauges on the instriinienl
panel to make certain the car was in top-notch operating condition.
Whenever you are driving the car, whether it be to the corner
grocery or to a neighboring town, check the gasoline gauge fre
quently—to save a long walk to a filling station.
Keep an eye on the temperature and oil pressure gauges.
Watch the ammeter. If the pointer shows “discharge" when the
engine is running rapidly, something is in need of attention.
By being alert to the position of all gauge indicators, you can
save yourself a lot of time and inconvenience.

Have you ever used grape leaves
in the home processing of cucum
ber pickles? If you have, do you
know why you used them? Better
color? Firmness? Taste? Or was
the recipe handed down from
grandmother or great-grandmoth
er?
If you have used this method
it would be of considerable interest
to hear from you because grape
leaves may supply the answer to
one spoilage problem which has
caused tremendous losses in the
growing commercial pickling indus
try.
The problem is concerned with
softening of cucumbers during
brime fermentation and the storage
of salt stack. Behind these losses
are enzymes-chemical compounds

produced by living cells which are
essential for biological processes.
It was discovered that these en
zymes were introduced into the cur
ing brine vat on withering, moldy
flowers still attached to the cu
cumbers at harvest time. Years of
research have gone into the discov
ery of a non-poisonous substance,
or inhibitor, which would prevent
this enzyme action. And this is
where grape leaves come in
Recent studies have indicated
that grape leaves contain a natural
inhibitor against the enzymes which
cause softening of the cucumbers.
It was further discovered that the
Scuppernong variety, of the Musca
dine family, a native American va
riety which originated in Tyrrell
county, yielded the highest concen
tration of the enzyme inhibitor.
It is obvious that the addition
of large quantities of grape leaves
to commercial cucumber vats
would be impractical. However, it
may be that the inhibitor can be
further identified and isolated so
that higher concentrations could be
easily obtained by synthetic meth
ods. If this can be done it would
prove to be of great value to the
pickling industry and other indus
tries where enzyme control is de
sirable.

More Veterans Applying for
Disability Insurance Forms
Veterans are applying for the
new total disability income pro

VA has issued more than 1,000 of
these provisions, the agency an
nounced.
The total disability provision (re
ferred to as TDIP) provides that if
the holder becomes totally disabled
for a period of six months or long
er he will receive from VA up to
$100 per month as long as the total
disability continues.
The face value of the insurance
policy itself is not decreased dur
ing the period of payments.
The additional premium pay

can be obtained from any VA of
fice. The veteran must show that
he is in good health.
The disability payments are at
the rate of $10 per month for
each $1,000 of insurance in force.
No payments are made, however,
for disabilities incurred after the
veteran has attained age 60. Other
