P.ige Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, September 4, 1959 Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY One of our Seniors at New Bern High school, Eloise Reel, is having trouble getting hack down to earth after her marvelous trip to Den ver, Colo,, for the International Chri.stian Youth Fellowship Com mission, 'She was one of five selected to attend from North Carolina, and one of 250 from the United States, Canda, Mexico and Puerto Rico, Al so attending from our Old North State were George Burkhalter of Charlotte, Celia Clark of Everett, Mike Willis of Washington, Jimmie Mattox of Dunn and the Rev, Dave Alexander of Wilmington. Rev. Alexander, a wonderful sport, drove the entire 4,500 mile.s and Eloise and the other teen-agers in the party were very enthusiastic about the way he fitted in with the group. Being chosen was quite a dis tinction, and Eloise has been par ticularly lucky. She was also select- Quality Shoe Repairing at Reasonable Prices Shoe Shop Hatem, Prop, 903 Broad Street iME 7-S0I1 ed last year and on that occasion .journeyed out to Fulton. Mo. How ever, she seems to have enjoyed the trip to Denver even more than her earlier one. “I was very much impressed with the mountains,” she says. They don’t have vegetation like our own mountains in the Land of the Sky, but they are much higher.” However, she was impressed most by the wheat fields in Kan sas. “We stopped at one place,” she told us, “and the silence was almost deafening. There were no people around anywhere, and not a single sound. You couldn’t hear so much as a single cricket. It was a very strange feeling to be in the midst of nothing but miles and miles of wheat.” Eloise is past president of the Christian Youth Fellowship at the Broad Street Christian church here. She is one of many boys and girls in our student body at New Bern High school who are active in the religious life of our community. We are proud of all of them. Scott Gos Coitipony 221 Middie Street Phone ME 7-3179 You probably know that bouncing a rubber ball has something to do with the compression of air inside and its return to normal when the pressure is released. But did you know that this same idea of spring iness is a vital quality in your carpet fibers’’ Tiiis fiber bounciness is impor tant for good looks, longer wear ing and easier cleaning, points out Mrs. Edith McGlamery, home de velopment specialist for the N. C. Agricultural Extension Service. A fiber is springy oecause the crimp, or waviness, of a fiber causes it to repel another fiber like itself. If you press the fibers to gether by walking or placing furni ture on them, they spring back as close as possible to their origin al shape when the pressure is tak en away. This is called resiliency. If the fibers haven’t a high de gree of resiliency, they will crush. Results will be a spotty looking rug because crushed fibers reflect the light differently. Repeated pres sure on the little creases in the fibers causes them to break and the rug looks worn. Dirt and fibers are matted together making the rug exeremely difficult to clean. A vacuum or steaming process will revive matter fibers. The more common rug fibers are acrylic, (Acrilan, Dynel, Verel) ny lon and super L rayon, rayon, cot ton. and acetate. ENGLISH YOUTH - (Continueci' from Page 1) honest answer. “They consider you loud mouthed and big headed,” he said. Judged from a distance, or even close at hand, many of us are prob ably guilty of this failing. But Bry an, if he ever had such feelings, doesn’t have them now. “I found you people to be kind and considerate.” he commented with deep earnestness. “In fact, you’re kinder and more considerate than our English people. Never again will I hear Americans criti cized without telling those who cri ticize just how nice you really are.” Therein lies much of the strength of the Farm Youth Exchange. Not only does it open the door for an exchange of ideas among rural youngsters, but is building a chain of international friendship and un derstanding. Sue Ormond, from our own Crav en county, will add a few links to the chain next month when she goes to Panama on a similar junk et. Like Biyan, she ts a worthy am- liassador of good will from her na tive land. SUBSCRIBE TO THE MiRROR CALL K. R. Jones FOR YOUR FUEL OIL ME 7-2127 Wherever thirsty prople are...
