The colors of the fall are appear; ing. Many plants are dropping their leaves, preparing for a dormant season. The insects that have been fed bountifully during summer are appearing on the stems and under leaves of plants. There are many more because the spring crop has matured. Last week the newspapers car ried an item about the danger of wasjis, hornets, yellow jackets, bees and snake bites. Most of the deaths were from insect stings. Some home remedies for stings are baking soda and vinegar, vani- la flavor and soda, nicotine from 8*ner«tor-St(rter and Regulator Rebuilding and Repaira Exida Batterlee SANDLIN BATTERY VULCANIZING CO. The Helleborus Niger, or the Christmas Rose is a large blossom of purest white with a blush of rose, above a mass of dark leaves. They grow 10 to 12 inches high and bloom from November until last of winter. They like half shady posi tions and plehty of cow manure and leaf mold. Leucojum Vernum (a spring snowflake) is a bulbous plant grow ing to a height of eight inches. It blooms in late April. It is a white flower tipped with green. It is excellent for cutting. Scilla Campanulata makes a beautiful show. They are nice for naturalizing and love shady places. They look like hyacinths. They come in white, blue and peach. They are nice for cutting too. Children will neither understand nor enjoy what critics are call ing the outstanding film of the year, but seeing it will an un forgettable experience for New Bern adults. America's press has been unanimous in saying that this performance by James Stew art is his greatest of many screen triumphs. I will follow thee alone. Thou animated torrid zone! To prove our point, here’s what happened down at Jacksonville. Seashore Transportation Compa ny operates a school bus there, simOar to the bus for New Bern High school children that leaves from the corner of Middle and Broad streets each morning. On the bus at Jacksonville, a brand new first-grader lost little time in starting a fight that was entirely unprovoked. The bus driv er, fearful of a recurrence, took the pugnacious lad in tow and drove to a house where the young ster said he lived. As soon as the bus stopped, the boy jumped out and ran into the house. It later developed that he ran through the front door and out of the back door, without so much as pausing. A woman came to the door, and the driver went into lurid detail in describing just how badly her child had behaved. She listened without interruption until he spoke his piece. 'Then she exclaimed, “It sounds terrible, but it so happens that the little boy who just dashed through my house isn’t my little boy. In fact, I don’t have any little boys. and I’ve never seen this kid before in my life.” Not only had the culprit staged a near riot on the bus, but was clever enough—if clever is the word—to lead the driver on a wild goose chase that was anywhere but in the direction of his home and a mother who probably would have tanned his hide. Maybe your six-year-old isn’t that mean, or that foxy, but the chances are you’ve been outsmarted quite a few times yourself by your own children. Different youngsters pull their fast ones in different ways, but they’re alike in one respect. They ’re cunning and they’re sly. L. R. You will never be entertained by a finer story, so wonderfully enacted by a splendid cast. Here is film narration at its best, James Stewart reaches the pinnacle of his great act ing career, as the easy going, small town lawyer who turns tiger in the courtroom to face his foe. We do not recommend this movie for children. They won't understand it or enjoy it. But for adults we can say without exaggeration that you will find if the most exciting and most entertaining motion picture of the year, and one of the best in screen history.
