"He went forth with his dis
ciples across the Kidron val
ley, where there was a gar
den.”—John 18:1.
Now is the season to plan your
colors, while you hiay get the
bulbs and plants. Include new
things in the garden. There are
many varieties of things that you
may plant this fall.
Include hibiscus, iavendula, lia-
tris, myosotis, physalis, rudbeckia
in your garden. Funkia or plantain
lily likes shady spots, and white
blossoms appear in July and Aug
ust. These also come in variegated
leaves. They make nice foliage for
flower arrangements. They may be
planted any time.
Linum, or flax may be planted
now for next spring. Plant delphin
ium for February blooms now.
They range in color from midnight
blues to rose and white. Plant gar
den pinks now.
September is the month to start

Wherever thirsty

planting for spring. Start to divide
old clumps of plants. Divide ger-
beras and all plants that live
through the winter.
Keep poinsettias pinched back
for nice Christmas blooms.
De-bud chrysanthemums for a
finer display of blooms in October
and November.
Always plant sweetpeas in the
fall, to insure early blossoms in
spring before hot weather.
Give your iris a good dusting of
sUlphur for the dampness.
Plant pansy and English daisies
now. Fertilize shrubs and place
leaves around them as they fall—
for winter mulching.
Gardens are such pretty things
We should give more time in ar
ranging and selecting the colors
that make a pleasing display. We
heartily agree with Edwin Mark
ham about Earth and its beauty.
This poem has all the gratitude of
a great heritage:
EARTH IS ENOUGH
We men of Earth have been the
stuff
Of paradise—we have enough!
We need no other thing to build
The stairs into the unfulfilled.
No other ivory for the doors.
No other marble for the floors.
No other cedars for the beam
And dome of man’s immortal
dream.
Here on the paths of every day—
Here on the common human way
Is all the stuff the gods would take
To build a Heaven, to mold and
make
New Edens. Ours the stuff sublime
To build Eternity in time!

Since Mary Kay Cobb of 1820
Spencer Avenue is now a sopho
more at New Bern High school,
she probably doesn’t recall this in
cident that occmred when she was
quite small.
At the time she was living at the
foot of Pollock street, next door to
Betty Jane Smithwick, who is a
junior this year at Greensboro Col
lege.
Late one afternoon, Mary Kay
was visiting in the Smithwick
home, and it so happened that
Mrs. Smithwick thought it would
be nice to Offer her a candy bar.
However, it was almost supper
time, so Mrs. Smithwick called out
of the window to Mrs. Cobb next
door to make sure it was all right.
Mfs. Cobb expressed her thanks,
but allowed as how she would rath
er that Mary Kay did not eat a
candy bar so close to supper. That
should have ended it, but Mary
Kay had other ideas.
A moment or two later, she ask
ed Mrs. Smithwick if she could
have a glass of water, and skipped
into the back of the house to get
it herself. It wasn’t water she want
ed, but that candy bar lying on
the kitchen table.
With that peculiar wisdom found
in the minds of children, she knew
she couldn’t smuggle it out, so she
tossed it into the backyard. Then
empty-handed and looking quite in
nocent, she came back through the
house, told Mrs. Smithwick good
bye, and raced for the backyard.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Cobb hap
pened to be looking out of her own
window when Mary Kay threw the
candy bar, and nabbed her when
she arrived in the backyard
Maybe honesty should be the
moral of this story. A better moral,
is to never underestimate the cun
ning of a child. They’re smarter
than you think.
