Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, September 25, 1959 f i ;■/; ’ Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY We certainly hope that the guil ty parties who have been throwing bottles against rural mailboxes on roads near our city aren't New Bern High school students, tt isn’t very clever to ride by a mailbox in an automobile, and smash a bottle on it. Ajiyone who does such a thing is not only act ing stupid, but showing a lack of character that may lead to worse things later. [f a sense of decency doesn’t pre vent us from committing such acts, it should be pointed out that this i.s not ordinary vandalism—which is bad enough—but a Federal of fense. New Bern’s postmaster, Mr. Ralph Stanley, has explained to us that the Federal government will prosecute anyone who damages a . If any of us should get caught, we wouldn’t get much sympathy from the Federal judge who tried our case. A judge doesn’t have much patience with people who are intelligent enough to know better, when they get into trouble. We shouldn’t get the idea that we won’t be caught. Once the Fed eral government sets out to catch a lawbreaker, it usually succeeds. If the smartest criminals can’t es cape detection, our chances to es cape aiTest are very slim. Things like this can’t be classed as pi’actical jokes. Nothing is a joke when it means damaging the property of other people. Besides, about the only thing any practical joke accomplishes is to bring em barrassment and hardship to some- somebody. What's funny about that? If you’re throwing those bottles, don’t say we didn't warn you. OOOOtmXXXlODfltWCfOOOOOWOOO^^ NEW e/fjothmd ADDING MACHINES 99 tim f«i $ Low Dowin Monthly Paymont Paymonts Owen G. Co.
