“He shall have dominion from
sea to sea, and from the river unto
the ends of the earth. Yea,, all
kings shall fall down before him;
all nations shall serve him. His
name shall endure forever; His
name shall be continued as long
as the sun; and men shall be bless
ed in him; all nations shall call
him blesssed. Let the whole earth
be filled with his glory.—Psalm
72:8, 11, 17, 19.
If you like beautiful landscaping
from flowering trees, plant the fol
lowing: the white and red crab ap
ples—they are beautiful; the cher
ry tree offers a variety of interest;
We have the Block, Nanking and
Oriental.
For beauty in spring, fall and
winter, plant plenty of pink and
white dogwoods. The Hawthorn is
a beautiful tree in spring, when
the cluster of white flowers ap
pears. It is equally pretty when
the branches are filled with red
berries in the fall.
—June and July; forget-me-not—
June; foxblove-^une and July;
Gass pink—June; peony—May
through July; Shasta daisy—June
through September. There are a
number of others that will give
plenty of blooms.
Let’s not iorget the coloring of
our surroundings during the sea
son. Take time out to enjoy the
seashore arid its beautiful sunsets.
A portion of one of Oliver Wendell
Holmes’ poems is beautiful for this
time of year.
The Chambered Nautilus)
This is the ship of pearl, which.
poets feign.
Sails the unshadowed main—
The venturous bark that flings
On the sweet summer winds its
purpled wings
In gulfs enchanted, where the siren
sings,
And coral reefs lie bare.
Where the cold sea-maids rise and
sun their streaming hair.
Thanks for the heavenly message
brought by thee.
Child of the wandering sea.
Cast from her lap forlorn!
From thy dead lips a clearer
note is born
Than ever Triton blew from
weathered horn!
While on mine ear it rings
Through the deep caves of thought
I hear a voice that sings.
Build the more stately mansions,
O ray soul.
As the swift seasons roll!
Let each new temple, nobler than
the last.
Shut thee from heaven with a
dome more vast.
Till thou at length art free.
Leaving thine outgrown shell
by life’s unresting sea. "
Plant Judas trees for a small
compact tree to be beautiful with
rosy-lavendar blooms. 'The red leaf
peach and plum tree offers a varie
ty of color in leaf and blossom.
Plant magnolias for foliage both
for outdoor and indoor enjoyment.
Enjoy the beauty of the beech
smoke tree, fringe tree and silver
bell. The Golden Rain tree is pret
ty too.
Many perennials will give you a
display of color and foliage the
year through, if you plant accord
ing to the months they bloom.
Here are a few dependable ones:
Alphine rock cress—April; poppy
—May; bleeding heart—May; blue
phlox — May; Columbine — April;
Aconite — June; baby’s breath —
June; Astilbe—^une; dragon head

My camellia (Japonica) plants
are turning yellow and losin.g
leaves. What can I do?
There are three possible sug
gestions that may be made to cor
rect this trouble. First, soil drain
age,. Camellias do not like “wet
feet.’’ Secondly, the plants may
have been set too deep in the soil.
This is a common error. When
plants are purchased from your
nurseryman or favorite garden sup
ply center, they are always “balled
and burlapped.” Dig a hole larger
than the ball, and set the plants
so that the top of the ball is even
with the soil level. Fill the hole
with equal volumes of peat and
good soil, firm and mulch with pine
needles.
The third, and most likely cause
is associated with soil pH. The ca
mellia likes a soil with a pH of
about 5.5. The only safe method to
determine the pH range is by a
soil test. When grading around
new homes or other buildings, lime
and plaster residues are mixed with
the soil which may raise the pH
to 7.0 or above. This is too “sweet”
for camellias and azaleas. See your
county agent, vocational agricul
ture teacher or-your soil conser
vation man and ask for a soil sam
pie kit. P\ill instruction will be
given, on the box, for taking and
mailing the samples.
Sulphur, or a mixture of three
parts sulphur and one part of iron
sulphate may be used to pull the
pH down, but you should know
the proper amount to use or you
may injure the plants. A soil test
is the only safe method.
The pyracanthas are beautiful in
our neighborhood. Plan to plant
one this fall and train it flat
against a wall, or a louver which
screens the carport. This can be
easily done by Elspalier training.
Because this plant is naturally a
rather straggly grower, some form
of training will give many pretty
patterns. It is best to start with
a young plant so that you can con
trol the effect you want to produce.
New Bern parents, whether they
’re well off or have to count their
pennies, need not short change
their moppets on delightful litera
ture.
Down at the New Bern Public
Library—as free as the air—you’ll
find a brand new assortment of
picture books.- Any one of these
volumes, picked at random, should
prove quite fascinating to your
youngster.
The books are well bound, and
naturally you wouldn’t want to
turn them over_to your child for
possible mistreatment. As a precau
tion, enjoy them with your off
spring. In fact, that’s what parents
ought to do anyhow, not only to
protect the library’s property but
to give children added pleasure.
When you visit the library, look
for “The Plain Princess and the
Lazy Prince,” “Which Witch,”
“Muley Ears,” Nobody’s Dog,”
“Terrible Terrifying Toby,” “The
Cat In The Hat,” “The Children
That Lived In A Shoe,” “The Dog
Who Grew Too Much,” “Contrary
Woodrow,” “I Like Caterpillars,”
“The Three Bears Visit Goldi
locks,” “Chester, The Little Pony,”
“Big Black Horse,” “A Fly Went
By,” “Little Red Newt,” “The Big
Jump,” and “A Big Ball of String.”
There isn’t an inferior book in
the whole lot. In fact, adults will be
quick to recognize the ingenious

Ten years ago one of the world’s
foremost physicists began to sim
plify the physical laws by adding
a fifth dimension to the basic four
dimensioms of space(-time, used
in modern physics. This fifth di
mension is the eternity domain of
our universe.
In this domain is to be found
the basis or origin of all things,
physical or mental. He stated that
therein lies the origin of energy
and matter. Life and consciousness.
The physical four-dimensional
space-time world is everywhere evi
dent. That its contact is constant
ly guided, and controlled by the
eternity domain. From whence it
receives its life and energy.
What does this prove? It proves
that the further man gropes for
truth the more he realizes there is
a spiritual world in control. The
more a scientist searches for logic
and reason, the more he realizes
the infinity of God’s intelligence,
and wonders of the natural forces.
I believe man’s mind is his entity
of Soul and God and will be allow
ed to invent and discover as things
need be until he becomes next to
God. Beyond the curtain of the un
known there lies a world even be
yond space and time. A spiritual
world from whence we came, and
to which we shall return. Jesus
stated this to Nicodemus as quot
ed in John 3:13—“And no man as-
cendeth up to heaven, except he
that came down from heaven, even
the son of man, which is in heav
en.” What a challenge to mankind
to pursue this field of knowledge.

manner in which the material was
created for young minds. Perusing
the volumes with your child will
bring back memories of your own
tot days, when a princess or a
witch was very real and wonderful
to you.
Speaking of witches, you might
agree that “Which Witch” is the
best of the new books that the
library has obtained for children.
Thumbing through its pages, we
discovered that one witch is very
rich and the other witch has the
itch. The latter witch has to start
from scratch, but the way it all
turns out will satisfy your child
We know you’re busy with house •
hold duties, so you’ll be glad to
know that all of the books are
