1959 Friday, October 30, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page ■■■■ reek, 432 As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events New Bernians who took a need less trip to Greenville last Friday night, all because the high school football game there was postponed without due notice, are rather bit ter about this turn of events. No one controls the weather, and certainly Greenville school officials can’t be blamed for the heavy rain that prompted calling off the con test. However, considering the in clement weather that prevailed during the day, it would appear that a decision could have been reached before special buses and do?ens of automobiles were already enroute to the Pitt capital. A great deal of money was wast ed on transportation expenses. Ev en at the last minute, when New Bern fans were on their way, we feel sure that the Highway Patrol would gladly have arranged to halt them had the Greenville officials requested such a courtesy. Things like this don’t do the Northeastern Conference any good, and inevitably bring strained re lations between the schools involv ed. Feuding in the sports realm, or in other fields of endeavor; is bad business. Yet, of inconsiderate treatment such as that accorded New Bernians in this instance, feuds are often born. Many of the high school games in the state were likewise called off on the same Friday night. However, we would like to think that the aver age school official is more cogni zant of his reisponsibility, and took steps to notify interested parties early enough to do something It’s a matter that ought to be thrashed out in the Northeastern Conference. Unless it is thrashed out, and a definite policy is estab lished, there will be other last minute decisions in the future.
