MIRROR MEDITATION Over the years I’ve seen a lot of sports—my favorite to watch is football. It is an excellent builder of youth, and I recommend it for any young man. It teaches him hundreds of les sons that will follow him through life. There comes to mind: physical fitness, preparedness, perspective, perserverance, stamina and forti tude. To lead, and give orders or to take orders, and follow instruc tions. It teaches him to think, to memorize, to be mentally alert and physically fit. He learns to act quickly, think accurately under pressure. It teach es him to push and fight harder when the going gets tough. It teaches him to set a goal for him self and others. He learns to call on his best, and promote the best in his fellows. To work together as a team. It teaches him to give everything he has to a dedicated purpose. It also teaches him to take defeat as a stepping stone toward better ing himself and his teammates for their next game. It teaches-him to give credit to the victor, yet causes him to reach down and face a new foe with renewed vigor. To take the hard knocks and to try-r-try— and try again. To play it f^ir, and never lose heart. Of course they make mistakes. This happens in all endeavor. Toys and books are quickly out grown, but seldom does your young ster fail to hoard his once prized possessions after they have lost all appeal. In that respect, kids are just like their Mom and Dad. One of the best lessons we can teach our moppets is the joy of sharing what they have with oth ers. Far be it from this column to suggest that your little girl give up the battered doll she is keeping for sentimental reasons. However, such keepsakes can be held to a mini mum with proper guidance from you. And, in holding them to a mini mum, you won’t be depriving your child. Instead, by teaching your off spring that giving tio someone else less fortunate is important, you’ll enrich his or her life. A good place to begin is with the many childhood books stored away in closets or attics. There are thou sands of these books stacked or scattered in New Bern homes, and the 'majority are in good condition. Talk the matter over with your child, and suggest that he or she give them to an underprivileged youngster of his acquaintance. In lieu of that, they will be put to good use if they are turned over to the Salvation Army or some oth er organization. For example, members of the Junior Woman’s club would be hap py to get them for the fine'work they are doing at Caswell Training School. Call Mrs. Morton Lipman, or any other member, and they will pick the books up. Better still, make arrangements to deliver the books to them and this will save them the trouble. The time you save these young women will be de voted to the project in other ways. When you have done this, call The Mirror and tell us how many books your child has contributed. , We’ll give him a pat on the back in Tot Talk. We can make a lot of boys and gfrls happy if we try. They do a lot of criticizing after the game is ov er. Hindsight experts, after the an swers are in their laps. However, one of the most won derful things to see that swells the heart with pride and admiration, is when you see those young stalwarts at the beginning of a game, fall to their knees at the sidelines,, before thousands of people. A stilled hush penetrates the immediate atmos phere as they sincerely pray. And win—or lose—the humble ritual is repeated at the end of each game, in the center of the field. Hundreds of students move out quickly, to take p^t. Have courage, parents and fans. For there being instilled, is the most wonderful and rewarding fruits of their effort. Down there on that field is Character in the making. This is the worth while victory that tops them all. In the years to come other scores will long be forgottten—but, the score of character, and integrity, once chalked up, is hard to erase.
