Friday, November 6, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. PageFlva As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events Kew Bern’s Bud Parker is prob ably the most talented third string er in the history of North Caro lina’s college football. Never, we are inclined to believe, has there been a bench wanner in the At- latic Coast Conference or the Southern Conference who came close to Parker’s promise and abili ty. Bud has played very little for the Demon Deacons of Wake For est, so there’s no accurate way to apply the yardstick to his poten tial. Notwithstanding the sensation al passing of Norman Snead, who pushed the local boy into oblivion, we’re convinced that Coach Paul Amen made a mistake in not using Bud more. Ironically, other colleges in and out of the State would have been REWEAVING Clgiralt* Burnt — Moth Holot Cutt and Taart Mrs. W. E. Street, Jr. SOS E. Front St. Phono ME 7-2771 Now Barn, N. Instead he is bound to feel hopelessly frus trated as he rides the bench When Bud was quarterbacking the New Bern High school Bears, and burning up the Northeastern Conference with his spectacular passing and running, it was already a foregone conclusion that he would play his college football for Wake Forest. Since his father is a Baptist preacher, no one expected the youngster to don anything but a Deacon uniform. All the factors that made up Parker’s lack of stardom at Wake Forest may not be known to the general public. And, we’ll admit, second guessing a coach accom plishes nothing. Even so, a lot of rather smart folks in the realm of football have told us that they still believe Bud could have been a gridiron great under favorable circiunstances. For oim part, we have seen plen ty of first stringers in the Atlantic Coast Conference—some of them playing for Wake Forest—^who did n’t have Bud’s ability.
