As Seen in The Mirror's
SPORTS
of Athletes
and Events
There are few things more de
pressing than playing ball for a
team that loses most of its games.
Hence, the 1959 season has been a
sickening and embarrassing experi
ence for members of the New Bern
High school football squad.
No glory settles on the shoulders
of the also-ran, in sports or in any
thing else. The cheers go to the
winner, and the jeers to the loser,
It is ever thus, so the Bruins are
tasting the same bitter dregs that
other athletes have tasted before
them.

Bears this season. Perhaps much
of their failure to excel was of
their own making. As some fans
undoubtedly feel, the coaching
staff may not have measured up.
When, the team looked good,
^hich hasn’t been often, it seemed
ro have what it takes to pick up
viiotories. When it looked bad,
nothing it did seemed right. Sel
dom did the Bruins get the lucky
Breaks that every ball club hopes
fpr. But it has been said, with jus
tification, that a really good ball
club makes its own breaks more
pften that not.
I For our part, we didn’t expect
i he New Bern team to be an honest
0 goodness contender in the
brtheastern Conference this sea-
on. If you recall, we took a rather
pirn view of its possibilities in a
re-season analysis written for the
aleigh News and Observer,
j Graduation had removed the
•team’s brightest stars, and inex
perience in key position was a fore
gone conclusion. Several promis
ing newcomers and a few depend
able hold-overs were on hand, but
from stem to stern it was obvious
that the ball club had flaws that
would cost touchdowns and games.
Coach Sam Arbes couldn’t pro
duce a winner, but in fairness to
him we’re not at all sure that some
other coach could have fashioned
a champion under the circum
stances.

security of wealth, only to feel
emptiness.
They become more frustrated be
cause they are yet incomplete.
They must eventually face one all
^important need beyond the biologi-
al, psychological or social. And
that is to recognize the Spiritual in
order to be whole. To attain the
full measure of contentment he
must recognize a Supreme Being,
or God.
He can then embrace a religion
that will help him to sow the seeds
that will flower into true happi
ness. For it is written—“Seek ye
first the kingdom of God and His
righteousness, and all these things
will be added unto you.”
LUCKY BREAK
Los Angeles — Mrs. Lucille Ra
leigh is a very happy woman . . .
she found $1,100 in the middle of
a busy highway near Santa Maria,
Calif. But she is the one who lost
the bundle in the first place.
‘ She left her purse on the fender
of her car before leaving Santa
Maria. As she drove off, the pocket-
book, containing $1,100 in cash,
fell to the road. When she discov
ered her loss, she drove back to
Santa Maria and reported it to po
lice. Then, heading back over the
same route, she spotted the purse,
intact, on the heavily traveled road.
