IN NEW BERN TODAY
Those of us who spent so much
''iitne and effort preparing Home-
coming floats for the parade were
rewarded. Our compensation came
from the realization of a job well
done, and from the complimentary
remarks of spectators.
It was kind of the weather man
to keep the rain from falling dur
ing the parade and our football
game. The very next day (Satur
day) was stormy, so we were very
lucky. We could have used some of
that luck in the football game play
ed against Tarboi'o in our New
Hern High school stadium.
Although the homecoming was
creditably put on, there is still
room for improvement. It would
be nice to have the graduates of
classes dating back as far as pos
sible participate in the parade.
Some of the classes might prepare
a float. Most every class if invited,
we believe, would at least enter an
,'jutomobile occupied by several
members of the class.
Then at the homecoming foot
ball game each class would arrange
to be seated together. We feel sure
that if nothing else was accom
plished it would help attendance.
Hundreds of New Bern graduates
haven’t been to a football game, or
a baseball or basketball game for
years and years.
We know you were proud of Pat
sy O’Neal, our 1959 Homecoming
Queen, when she was crowned Fri
day night at halftime. She is so
friendly that everybody loves her

If you hope someday to be a home
coming queen yourself, here’s a tip
for you. Patsy picked up a lot of
votes from freshmen, who appreci
ated her attitude toward lowly
ninth graders. She probably does
n’t even know this herself, but it’s
true.
Congratulations to the. New Bern
High school a capella choir and the
high school dance band for their
fine performances during the
state-wide principals’ conference.
They made a splendid impression
on all those visitors who were
here.
GARDEN
TIME
This may be a good time to de
part from the usual and quote a
poem written by Albert L. Mason,
a fruit grower of Orleans county,
N. Y. He is a graduate of Cornell
university. He composed a book of
poems which w'as published by
the American Fruit Grower maga
zine. I like this one:
"Little Things"
There’re places where I’ll never be;
There’re vistas that I’ll never see;
On many roads I’ll never go;
So many folks I’ll never know;
There’re many sounds I’ll never
hear;
Some feats I’ll never engineer;
So many things I’ll never do;
So much that’s strange I can’t
construe.
And yet I’m glad that I can live
In manner quite diminutive.
With awe I’ve watched the sun
come up
Or peeked into a buttercup;
I’ve felt the thrill of May at night
In apple orchards pink and white;
I’ve caught a glimpse of orioles;
I’ve looked for bluebirds’ nests
in holes;
I’ve listened to a hoot owl hoot;
I’ve wrestled with a plow all day;
I’ve coated trees with sulfur spray.
From little things I get my thrills.
From puppy dogs to daffodils.
Envy always implies conscious
inferiority wherever it resides.

RADIANT ROYALTY—Today for our Mirror Maid we pre

Veterans holding GI term insur
ance ought to look into the advan
tages of converting their policies
to permanent plans before they get
any older, the Veterans Administra
tion said.
Term polices increase in cost as
the policyholder gets older, for
the game amount of insurance, ac
cording to VA. At age 70, agency
said, the average American male
has seen his income decrease due
to retirement or other causes to
around $1,000 a year.
Yet if a veteran of World War II
keeps his GI policy as term insur
ance to that age, he would be pay
ing a total in monthly premiums of
$741.60.
Information on converting term
policies to permanent types of in
surance can be gotten at any VA of
fice. The chief feature of per
manent plans, according to the
agency, is that their premium cost
remains constant at all ages. The
veteran at age 70 would be paying
no higher premium than when he
was 40 years old.
Permanent policies make it pos
sible for the holder to build up an
estate, VA said, pointing out that
after one year the policyholder can
borrow on his policy.
In another caution about GI in
surance policies, VA warned vet
erans they should make certain that
their list of beneficiaries—the per
sons to whom the proceeds will be
paid on their death—is kept up to
date with VA. This also can be
taken care of at any VA office.
Decision is a sharp knife that
cuts clean and straight; indecision,
a dull one that hacks and tears
and leaves ragged edges behind it.
—Gordon Graham.
I believe the first test of a truly
great man is his humility.

Rachel Mundine ~
(Continued from Page 1)
she can take time off from her en
gagements to come back for anoth-
ed performance.
In that she shares the feelings of
other Revue graduates like Mickey
Gunnersen, Johnny Genolius, Ka
thy Young and John O’Steen, who
have attained a measure of fame
on the stage, in the movies or on
television, but haven’t outgrown
the thrill of their first rung of suc
cess as an entertainer.
Rachel, like the others, is blessed
with a deep sense of humility, and
that in the final analysis is even
more valuable than brass in attain
ing real stardom. It’s nice to know
that she is still the very nice kid
we remember with affection and
admiration.
Well arranged time is the surest
mark of a well arranged mind.
