THE NtW BERN MIRROR, NEW BEMt, N. C
of Athletes
and Events
New Bern fans don’t have long
to wait now for their first taste of
basketball fare on the home court.
Facing the Bruins on December 1
in their curtain raiser will be
Pamlico Central.
Down in Spud county they take
the cage game seriously, and this
interest is reflected in the caliber
of the teams they put out. No
Pamblico team is ever a push over
for anybody, so the Bears can ex
pect spirited competition right
from the start.
In most rural schools, basket
ball has always been the top sport.
More often than not when city
quints tackled the country lads the
town boys came off second best.
With the advent of football in even
the smaller institutions, some of
the concentration on the cage game
has eased up, but it still holds
true that basketball is the rural
fan’s and the rural athlete’s first
love.
Two nights after their battle
with Pamlico Central here the
Bears will be playing host to
Beaufort. This too should be a
contest worth any fan’s money. It
is typical of all Carteret county
ball clubs that they hustle all the
way. New Bern’s football team—

—can attest to this fact.
After these two home games, the
Bruins take to the road for three
non-Conference engagements. They
will oppose Vanceboro on Decem
ber 8, Pamlico Central again on
December 10, and Beaufort once
more on December 15.
Jacksonville comes to town on
pecember 17 to pry the lid off the
Northeastern Conference schedule.
The Onslow aggregation would get
« great measure of delight out of
frouncing the Bruins, knowing the
Ipop race is apt to be a wide open
affair where every entry has a
chance at the championship.
After - the Cardinal encounter,
Jhe locals call Ume out for the
^nstmas holidays. They resume
meir Conference campaign at Tar-
boro on January 5, and play Roa-
^oke Rapids here on January 8.

‘We at the Veterans Administra
tion urge the veterans who hold
GI term insurance policies to write
dr visit their nearest VA office and
talk to the contact man to see if
their policies fit their present and
future needs.”
s This advice was extended to vet
erans by the Administrator of Vet
erans Affairs, Sumner G. Whittier,
ip an interview for publication in
d nationally circulated daily news
paper.
1 “Veterans have the right to con
vert their policies from a term to a
^rmanent plan,” Whittier said.
“TOe term premiums become very
heavy about the point a man re
tires. There are some three million
World War II veterans who have
riot converted. If 20 years from
npw, these three million are pay
ing very heavy premiums, there
will be a serious problem.”
;Term policies increase in costs
ag the policyholder gets older, for
tke same amount of insurance. The
ifrerage age of World War II vet
erans today is 40 years. If a World
War II veteran has $10,000 of Na
tional Service Life Insurance as
term insurance, his premium will
increase periodically, VA says. At
the age of 70, he would be paying
$731.60 yearly in premiums.
If the veteran converts his pol
icy is a permanent type of Nation
al Service Life Insurance, the
amount of premium remains con
stant through the life of the policy
the same as at the age at which he
converts. i
Also, VA said, permanent polices
make it possible for the holder to
build up an estate and after the
first year the policyholder may
borrow on his policy.

FIRST AND LAST MAYOR
Cincinnati — Harry Graham was
elected the first mayor of the vil
lage of Sycamore recently. He
wants to be its last mayor, too.
Graham’s platform was only a
pledge to seek to have the new
village in northeast Hamilton coun
ty unincorporated again. He says
Sycamore never should have been
incorporated in the first place.
Graham said he and his support
ers would start circulating peti
tions immediately seeking a special
election to end the community’s
short life.
