Page Eight THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, December 4, 1959 Teen Topics IN NEW BERN TODAY Although the great majority of our New Bern High school students are never guilty of lawlessness, all of us suffer criticism when local teen-ager‘s da wrong. Any young person who thinks it is smart to break the law, and figures on getting away with it, .should read these words by the head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover. “A valuable ally in the fight against crime, the news media of the nation can afford further pub lic service in focusing the spotlight of public opinion on those mem bers of the judiciary who, in the face of the present crisis, persist in endangering the public by un leashing young terrorists appre hended at great risk by law en forcement officers. “Parents who, through bad ex ample, indifference, or lust for worldly gain, inflict upon their fellow men the scourge of vicious offspring deserve to feel the sting of public indignation and to face legal and financial responsibility for the criminal acts of their chil dren. “At this time, when the increase in youthful crimes constitutes the bulk of the shameful rise in our national crime, serious considera tion should be given to towering the age distinction between a ju venile and an adult violator. We are dealing with vicious young criminals, and they should be treated as such. “The prevention of juvenile de struction lies in the establishment I of juvenile discipline. Assuredly, j this is the responsibility of every ; individual interested in his own ' safety and the welfare of his coun try.” These are words that not only our students but parents of stu dents should seriously consider. All of us, as teenagers, feel quite often that our mothers and fathers are too strict. However, it is true that juvenile crime often origi nates in homes where there isn’t enough discipline. When our parents have faith in us, and give us privileges, we owe it to them to justify this faith.
