Friday, December 11, 1959 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Five i As Seen in The Mirror's SPORTS of Athletes and Events New Bern’s Carolina fans, in cluding those who hopped on the bandwagon after Thanksgiving Day, are still gloating over the 50-0 slaughter of Duke’s Blue Devils. Nothing that Santa Claus brings could possibly be as nice as this overwhelming victory. Everybo4y got fooled badly on this one, including all the leading sports writers. Even the profession al gamblers regarded it as a toss- up. Anyone with an inkling of what was going to happen could have reaped a fortune in bets. What it was wasn’t football, it was murder. Duke’s rather unimpressive season possi bly kept Mike McGee off several All-American selections, but he didn’t do half bad in landing on Look Magazine’s team and winning the coveted Outland Award for the best interior lineman in the na tion. Mike’s twin brother, Jim McGee, was until this season a member of the New Bern High school coach ing staff. Although the two look alike, Mike got most of the size and made good use of it during his outstanding career on the college gridiron. New Bern fans were treated to a sample of Mike’s prowess long be fore he won fame at Duke. He was a terrific lineman in every respect while playing for the Elizabeth City Yellow Jackets in the North eastern Conference. So impressive was his defensive work that it was a foregone conclusion he would be a star one day in the college ranks. Here on the local scene, where high school basketball is now the order of the day, the Bruins have probably learned a thing or two in pre-season competition. Scrim mages with members of your own aquad are necessary and important, but nothing beats an actual game to give an athlete the experience needed. The Bears may not do so badly, after all, in the Northeast ern Conference campaign. Falsted, Denmark — Mrs. Marie Jensen recently celebrated her 103rd birthday.
